On Friday, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre are in the North Sea. The three summits arrive this morning at the Troll A gas platform together with CEO of Equinor Anders Opedal. The Troll field is among the world’s largest gas fields, and the largest gas discovery made in the North Sea. Ahead of the visit to the North Sea, Støre, Stoltenberg and von der Leyen had a meeting in Bergen. It is expected that they will comment on what has emerged there, when they meet the press on the platform. news is present on the platform together with the political leaders. The field extends over an area of 750 square kilometers in blocks 31/2, 31/3, 31/5 and 31/6 in the North Sea. Troll is the very cornerstone of Norwegian gas production and the largest gas discovery made in the North Sea. The field contains approximately 40 percent of the total gas reserves on the Norwegian continental shelf. Troll is also among the largest oil fields on the Norwegian continental shelf; in 2002, oil production was over 400,000 barrels per day. Statoil is the operating operator for the Troll A, B and C platform and the landing pipes, while Gassco is the operator on behalf of Gassled for the gas processing plant at Kollsnes. Statoil is the technical service provider for the operation of Kollsnes. It is expected that the huge gas reservoirs 1,400 meters below sea level will be able to produce for at least 70 years. Source: Statoil The EU’s largest supplier of natural gas The EU and NATO yesterday launched a joint military task force to secure critical infrastructure in Europe. The backdrop for the increased preparedness is the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, as well as the use of energy as a weapon, writes the European Commission in a press release. After the war in Ukraine, Norway has become the EU’s largest supplier of natural gas. Norway’s oil and gas installations are part of the new cooperation on social security between the EU and NATO. The meeting on the platform demonstrates the cooperation that is ongoing to detach Europe from Russian oil and gas. There he said that Norway needs NATO, in addition to the military and the Home Guard, to protect the infrastructure, writes Aftenposten. Before the trip to Davos, the protection of important infrastructure was the topic when the Equinor CEO was invited to the NATO Council in Brussels. EU with zero emissions law Norway and the EU have, among other things, a common interest in getting a piece of the USA’s extensive subsidy package, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), where NOK 3,700 billion will be spent on subsidies for green industrial development in the USA. Yesterday, the European Commission put forward a proposal for a net-zero emissions law, in response to the IRA. The aim is for 40 per cent of clean technology to be produced in Europe by 2030.
