New low pressure on the road – predicts storms on the coast and in the mountains – news Vestland

– We expect traffic challenges, but also challenges linked to a lot of heavy snow that can settle on cabin roofs and trees. In fact, so heavy that it can have consequences, says state meteorologist Martin Granerød. Today, several danger warnings have been sent out linked to just under 24 hours with a lot of wind, snow and rain. Orange warning of 25–40 cm of snow in parts of Agder and Telemark Yellow warning of snow for the rest of southern Norway south of Dovre and Stad, with the exception of Innlandet. Warning of strong gusts of wind in Rogaland and Sunnhordland. The avalanche warning reports a high avalanche danger for Sunnmøre, Indre Fjordane, Hardanger, Heiane and Voss. The hazard warning covers most of southern Norway. In some areas in Agder and Telemark, there may be up to 25-40 cm of snow. For parts of East Norway and West Norway, 10-20 cm may occur. Graphics: Meteorological Institute – Drive according to the conditions and allow plenty of time Agder and Telemark have had several rounds of heavy snowfall and sometimes traffic chaos throughout the winter. They did not escape in this round either. It starts on Thursday afternoon. After a good snowfall, both sleet and rain take over as the mild weather spreads northwards. It can cause trouble. State meteorologist Martin Granerød. Photo: Kamilla Pedersen/MET – In situations where there is a lot of snow first, and it gets wet, then there will be a lot of problems linked to surface water. It can get quite icy and slippery, warns Granerød. The state meteorologist asks road users to drive according to the conditions, and to allow extra time for driving from Thursday evening and most of Friday. – For the most part, things are going well for the biggest vegans. Here is the biggest challenge when the snow is at its worst, he says. Expect problems on the mountain passes The wind that accompanies the low pressure will be felt best in coastal areas and exposed places. Such as on the mountain passes. The strongest winds will be Thursday evening and the first part of Friday. – Stiff gales combined with snowy weather often result in poor visibility and challenging conditions, says Granerød. – Those who drive east-west should be warned of bad weather from Thursday evening and through Friday. In the National Roads Administration, department director Svenn Egil Finden warns that mountain crossings may be convoyed or closed. – Filefjell is normally the safest mountain pass, he says. Hardangervidda and Vikafjellet in particular are at risk when the wind comes from the direction now reported. Filefjell can also be closed. Finden asks travelers to take precautions. – Check the conditions where you will be driving. If there is a column, you should have enough fuel, and warm clothes and food in the car. Red warning for avalanches The wind and the snowfall also cause a great danger of avalanches in the mountains. Varsom reports avalanche danger at red level, i.e. the second highest level, for Sunnmøre, Indre Fjordane, Hardanger and Heiane. People are advised from all avalanche terrain. – Large landslides can loosen by themselves. The most exposed terrain is mountain sides to the north-west, but persistent weak layers can be active and cause landslides in all directions, Varsom.no writes on its website. Eases into the weekend State meteorologist Bente Wahl asks people to take precautions. – Wind gusts of 30-35 meters per second are powerful, and then you should take precautions, she says. Photo: MAGNE VELLE Beyond Friday, the low pressure gradually starts to come so far north that we get a different wind direction. – Then it seems that the wind will decrease, and the worst is over. In the afternoon and evening it will be considerably better in southern Norway, says state meteorologist Bente Wahl. At the same time that southern Norway receives a replenishment of both white and wet precipitation, Trøndelag, Nordland and Troms and Finnmark get a taste of the Easter mood. It seems to be waiting for the “Southerners”. – Because on the backside of the low pressure, fairly mild air follows, and when there is snow on the ground, it becomes low cloud cover, foggy, quite gray and periods of rain, says Granerød.
