After a Chinese balloon was shot down over the USA on 5 February this year, the Americans have shot down three more unknown objects in the past week. President Joe Biden commented tonight on recent events. – We currently do not know what the three objects are, but there is no indication that they were linked to Chinese espionage or any other country’s intelligence, says Biden. The preliminary theory is that the objects belong to private companies or research institutions. – But let me express myself clearly. If any object poses a threat, I will shoot it down, Biden said. More sensitive radars After the Chinese balloon was shot down, the Americans changed the settings of their radar systems to be able to pick up smaller objects. – We therefore have no basis for the fact that there have been more frequent occurrences of objects. We detect more because the radar is tuned for that, says Biden. Biden says steps will be taken to ensure increased monitoring of unmanned objects in American airspace. – I have asked my team to draw up guidelines for how to handle balloons and other objects in the future, says Biden. – Have nothing to regret The US is clear that the Chinese balloon that was shot down on 5 February was used for espionage. American authorities are now in the process of analyzing the wreckage of the balloon, but according to Biden, the balloon has not picked up information from sensitive areas. The balloon ride has had political consequences for relations between the United States and China. US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken was originally supposed to travel to China last week, but canceled at the last minute to avoid the balloon dominating the meetings. – I have nothing to regret and expect to speak to Chinese President Xi soon. The first balloon came from China and was first spotted over the Aleutian Islands off Alaska on 28 January. It was shot down off the coast of South Carolina. Just over a week later, an unknown object was shot down off the northern coast of Alaska. The following day, Canadian fighter jets took to the wings and shot down an object over the Yukon. Two days later, another unknown object was spotted over the USA and then shot down. This time in the state of Michigan. Ismail Burak Akkan/news
