– It is very frightening to walk out in the streets and know that a 13-year-old boy can get hold of a weapon and shoot. We always look left and right to follow what is going on, says Sarah (19). news meets two women on the streets of Jerusalem. They are young and wear long black skirts. They believe the shooting and killings that have taken place in the country are very sad, and refer to the 13-year-old who shot and wounded two Israelis in Jerusalem yesterday. – I think the problem lies in the education of such boys. They train them to kill people. We think there will be more tension, but we hope the new government will do something about it. It happens because of hatred, says her friend Yalta (18). The boy shot at a group of Jews who were on their way to Jerusalem’s Old City, the police say. Some of them were armed and shot the 13-year-old, who was taken to hospital. It happened the day after a 21-year-old armed Palestinian killed seven Israelis outside a synagogue in occupied East Jerusalem. The Prime Minister says that it will be faster to block off and destroy attackers’ homes. He wants to make it easier for Israeli civilians to obtain gun permits, and he wants to punish the families of Palestinian attackers by depriving them of social services and health benefits. Spiral of violence Last Thursday, nine Palestinians were killed in an Israeli raid against a refugee camp in Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian health officials say 20 others were wounded. Even before the latest attacks in Jerusalem, the UN pleaded for an end to what they describe as an endless spiral of violence in the West Bank. The synagogue attack has also provoked strong reactions from the international community, which at the same time asks Palestinians and Israelis to restrain themselves. Two of those killed in the shooting outside the synagogue on Friday were buried today. Photo: MENAHEM KAHANA / AFP – Norway condemns the terrorist attack against Israelis at the synagogue in East Jerusalem, says Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (Ap), adding that such attacks against civilians are completely unacceptable. She says it is also terrible that a large number of Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank in recent days. – Political leaders must contribute to de-escalation. This conflict can only be resolved politically, says Huitfeldt. New intifada? Out on the streets of Jerusalem, news meets a Palestinian who says this about what has happened: – I am opposed to killing anyone. But the situation is sometimes very difficult and it leads us as Palestinians to act in this way. For example, many people are killed, and some take revenge for it, father-of-two Josef tells news. The Palestinian father of two, Josef, did not want to show his face. He fears that there will be a new intifada. Photo: Åse Marit Befring / news He does not believe that a 13-year-old understands what is going on. He believes that the boy was influenced by the media and others who stood behind and told him what he should do. But still, Josef has a certain understanding of what the boy did. – For me as a Palestinian, it is a brave thing to do, for a 13-year-old to take a weapon and shoot someone. The father of two believes that there will be more excitement. He believes that the government is probably steering towards a new intifada, i.e. a new Palestinian uprising. He points out that the Palestinians are humiliating themselves, and that many want to fight and defend their country. Two Israelis see it in a different way: – The fact that a 13-year-old takes up arms makes me angry and sad, says Benjamin to news. He is also afraid that the tension will increase, but he hopes that will not happen. – You can see the mentality of people who carry out this type of murder. Afterwards they celebrate in the villages and are happy to have killed innocent people who went to pray, says jewelery designer Ilan Illouz.
