19 January 2023 at 19:05 Bizarre expulsion in the handball WC: – I think he tried to bite me It was ten minutes into the second half that the incident occurred. American Paul Skorupa was in a duel with Husain Al-Sayyad from Bahrain. A free-throw was awarded to Bahrain and at that point Skorupa had his head down on Al-Sayyad’s forearm and appeared to bite the opponent. Al-Sayyad also showed off his arm, where there were some minor red marks. After the referee had looked at video footage of the incident, they chose to give a red card and a blue (which means that Skorupa may receive a suspension) for the incident. Standing on the sidelines was Norway’s former national team coach, Robert Hedin. The Swede is now national team manager for the USA and threw up his arms and seemed clearly unhappy with the decision. Hedin tells news that he has not seen the video images from the situation. – The judge believes that he bit him. They said they didn’t see it on the video, but they said the marks looked like bite marks, says Hedin. – Have you been involved in something similar, where a player is accused of biting? – No, I actually don’t have that. But we will experience a lot. I have never experienced anything like this before, says Hedin. Al-Sayyad explains it like this: – I simply do not know what happened. We have come here to play handball, and then I think he tried to bite my arm, he says to Danmarks Radio. – I kept my composure and went to the referee to show my arm and asked them to check the video images, says Al-Sayyad in a comment to news, relayed by the Bahrain team manager. Skorupa denies that he tried to bite Al-Sayyad. – It is completely wrong. I defend myself with my head, but I would never bite him. You can see that his arm is a little red, but it’s probably just my head that made that mark, says Skorupa. Photo courtesy of Viaplay.
