– You become enraged, despairing and afraid. The children must be safe here, and we are trained to handle crises. When something like this happens, it completely buckles under your feet. This is what the director of Åsebøen FUS nursery school, Grete Vedøy, says, clearly affected by the incident. On Wednesday 18 January, the unthinkable happened in her nursery. A little girl started vomiting after playing in the outdoor area. – We didn’t understand anything. The child was later taken to Haugesund Hospital with burns to the mouth. The parents took her to the doctor, and were eventually sent home. – After a little while, I was delivered a bottle. When I touch it, my hands really sting. Then the alarm bell went off with us, and we understood that something was not right, says Vedøy. This bottle was found in the nursery shortly after the child was sent home. Photo: Privat The child suffered damage to her tongue and palate, and it is said to have been proven from a blood test that she had been in contact with some kind of corrosive liquid. On Thursday, the nursery keeps all the children inside, even if they have washed all areas. Vedøy has received several calls from concerned parents. The police are taking the incident seriously Police station chief in Karmøy, Frode Klausen, says they are taking the case seriously. – We sent a patrol up to the nursery after receiving a message. We were confirmed by two children who had been in contact with a possible corrosive liquid. The police have questioned staff at the nursery and have carried out a crime scene investigation. – We have also secured something that we can submit for analysis. Some young people have been observed in the local area, and we would like them to contact us. We don’t have any suspects in the case yet, says Klausen. Shocked Christine Olsen is deputy chairperson of the parents’ committee for kindergartens (FUB). She says you keep hearing about incidents involving vandalism in kindergartens. – But we have never heard of such a serious case before. It is absolutely unbelievable.
