In the Winter Olympics in Beijing, there were 16 golds and a total of 37 medals, a new gold record in the Winter Olympics. There have also been a number of great Norwegian achievements outside of winter sports, with WC/EC gold in athletics, cycling, beach volleyball, shooting, handball and triathlon – to name a few. In the male athlete of the year category, there were a total of twelve nominees, including Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Erling Braut Haaland, Casper Ruud, Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and Johannes Thingnes Bø. And the award went to Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who in 2022 took WC gold in the 5000 metres, WC silver in the 1500 meters and EC gold in both 1500 and 5000 metres. It is the first time Ingebrigtsen has won the award as male performer of the year. He has previously won the athletes’ award twice (in 2019 and 2022) and the award for breakthrough of the year in 2019. Ingebrigtsen is currently in Spain on a high-altitude camp, but was part of the broadcast from the training camp. – Thank you very much for an incredibly generous price, says Ingebrigtsen. – It is cool to be Norwegian in the year that has been and in the years to come. Per capita, we must be the nation with the most quality. It is extremely inspiring and cool to be a part of, says Ingebrigtsen. Mol and Sørum named team of the year The first prize to be awarded was the team of the year. It went to the beach volleyball couple Anders Mol and Christian Sørum. The two also won the award last year. Mol and Sørum won WC gold for the first time in 2022, and they have now won gold in the Olympics, WC and EC. – We have many to thank.
