– For me, it comes on top of everything. The ladies must jump in slopes of around 85 metres. The Silvester tournament should perhaps be the jumping week. It’s a big mess for me, and on top of that comes this little owl. She’s golden – that’s okay. But an owl? What is that?, says Hannawald to news. The German jumping legend, who won the show jumping week in the 2001/02 season, did not hide his dissatisfaction with the trophy in an interview with BR24 last week. – I had to gulp inside, he said of the trophy then. – Are there other birds that fly more elegantly? The New Year’s Eve tournament was held for the first time last season. Then there were two races in Slovenian Ljubno that made up the tournament, which was won by Austrian Marita Kramer. This season there were four races, as in the men’s show jumping week, with two races in the Austrian Villach and two races in Ljubno. In the end, it was the Austrian Eva Pinkelnig who could lift the golden owl as proof that she emerged victorious. – There are other birds that fly more elegantly than a nocturnal, spherical thing in the air, Hannawald believes. Photo: DANIEL KARMANN / AFP In the German-Austrian show jumping week, the winner since the 2010/11 season has received a trophy with a gold-plated eagle. news has been in contact with Austria’s sports director Mario Stecher, who is present during the men’s show jumping. He does not want to be interviewed. Tomi Trbovc in the Slovenian Ski Association wrote to news that they chose the owl as a female counterpart to the well-known golden eagle. – Compared to the eagle, the owl is fearless, flexible, quiet, gentle, photogenic and common in Slovenia and Austria’s alpine area. It is an extraordinary flyer – just like the eagle, writes Trbovc. Lundby: – Has joked a lot about it The former German national team coach Andreas Bauer told news that he would prefer an eagle as a trophy also in the Silvester tournament for women and smiles lightly when asked by news about the golden owl. – It was actually terrible. It is a bird that can hardly fly, and that just sits quietly. It doesn’t work, says Bauer, and continues: – It’s very comical. I don’t know what those in the marketing department in the Silvester tournament have been thinking. Norway’s winningest jumper, Maren Lundby, is not particularly impressed by the owl either. – I have to admit that I had a good laugh the first time I heard it too. We joked a lot about it, and didn’t let it get to us that much. But we think it’s a bit of fun. There is a little difference between winning a great eagle and an owl, writes Lundby in an SMS to news. TROPHY: Maren Lundby has been on top of the podium many times. Here she is with the gold medal and a trophy from the WC in 2021. Photo: Terje Pedersen / NTB – Actually, I thought the design was quite nice. Lundby did not participate in the Silvester tournament in the season, which Austrian Eva Pinkelnig won. In December, it was also announced that a full German-Austrian show jumping week for the women could probably be arranged in the 2024/25 season at the earliest. – I of course hope that we can also fight for eagles, and not owls in the future, writes Lundby. Although there was no German-Austrian show jumping week for the women this season, the Silvester tournament was a big boost for Anna Odine Strøm. She took her first World Cup win when she won in Ljubno on New Year’s Eve and ended up second overall. Unlike Hannawald, Bauer and Lundby, Strøm has a sense of the golden owl. – I actually think the design on the owl was quite nice. As I see it, owls are often seen as the more intelligent birds, but I can agree that there are birds that fly more gracefully, she wrote in an SMS to news. – Time will tell if a little history will contribute to adding more prestige to the tournament, and that it can make the trophy more popular, she writes. We have decided in the German Ski Association that we will organize the next season in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf, says Bauer. – We can only speak for the two ski jumps we have in Germany. Of course, there are not four and the traditional show jumping week is four show jumping events. But what shall we do? We start now, and then we have to wait to see what Austria does, says Bauer. – Now we have equality and the ladies will have ski flying in Vikersund this year. It’s about time we do that. The German plan is to have a race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on 29 December and then a race in Oberstdorf on 1 January – so opposite to the men’s calendar.
