The hosts turned around to win 2-1 in Serie A on Wednesday. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the match had to be stopped for several minutes when Lazio fans chanted racist chants against Lecce players Samuel Umtiti and Lameck Banda. In response, Lecce’s home fans tried to drown out the chants by chanting Umtiti’s name. Despite the great comeback, in which Lecce turned from 0-1 to a 2-1 victory, Umtiti left the pitch in tears. – Only football, fun and joy. The rest don’t count, Umtiti nevertheless wrote on Instagram after Wednesday’s match. The president of the International Football Federation (Fifa), Gianni Infantino, caught wind of the incident and showed his support for Umtit and Banda on Instagram: – Solidarity with Samuel Umtiti and Lameck Banda. Let’s shout it loud and clear: No to racism. According to Lecce president Saverio Sticchi Damiani, it was Umtiti who asked the referee to continue the match after the interruption, writes Reuters. It is far from the first time there have been cases of racism in the Italian elite series. Last August, Napoli’s Nigerian goal machine Victor Osimhen was the victim of racist chants from Verona fans.
