Just a few days before Christmas Eve, there is mostly snow over most of Norway. And the good news for enthusiasts of snowy Christmas celebrations is that a lot of it will be lying around until the Christmas weekend. It is especially in Eastern Norway, inner parts of Southern Norway, inner parts of Western Norway, Trøndelag and Northern Norway that the possibility of a white Christmas is now greatest. SNOW DEEP: Where it is dark blue is the most snow today. In the green areas, it has become bare ground. Photo: Skjermdump / Senorge.no A week into December, meteorologists were initially optimistic about a snow-covered Norway at Christmas. But then the temperatures turned in several places in the country. It therefore looks far worse in the coastal areas of Agder, Rogaland, Vestland and parts of Møre and Romsdal. – The snow that is lying now must survive the day today and Wednesday if there is to be a white Christmas, says on-duty meteorologist Tone Christin Thaule at the Meteorological Institute. Mild weather washes away the snow It can be difficult. In both Bergen and Stavanger, it seems that the residents will have to manage without snow on Christmas Eve, as statistically they often have to. SMOOTH AND GRAY: The fine snowfall in Bergen last week turned into bone-breaking ice cover when the mild weather hit on Monday. Here from the Christmas market at Festplassen. Photo: Sissel Rikheim / news The reason is the mild air that is expected in southern Norway today and tomorrow, explains Thaule. In some places it will also rain, but it is variable how much it comes and how much it comes. – In coastal areas in Southern Norway, Rogaland and further north in Western Norway, we think much of the snow will disappear during the day or tomorrow. – Into the fjords, on the other hand, and in places like Voss, the temperature will be low enough for the snow to remain until Christmas Eve, says the meteorologist. Mild air also northwards along the coast Also in coastal areas in Møre and Romsdal, Trøndelag and even on the Helgeland coast, the most snow-loving will have to hold their breath on Wednesday and Thursday. – The mild air will move north from Western Norway. This means that the coast in Møre, Trøndelag and on the Helgeland coast will get plus degrees. So the snow has to survive that, says Thaule. On Christmas Eve itself, it will be below zero over large parts of the country. Here are the forecasts for the minimum and maximum temperature in Norwegian cities on the big day. COLD: The mild weather along the coast will give way and on Christmas Eve the freezing temperatures will be reported all over the country. Photo: Meteorological Institute More snow She adds that elsewhere in the country, they are confident that the snow will remain until Christmas Eve and the following days. Some will even get refills in the next few days. In Agder, there will be precipitation in the form of sleet and snow today. This will move north-eastwards across Austlandet and further into Sweden. Along the coast in Agder, there will be a transition to rain. The same movement takes place on Thursday. It is Austlandet south of Hamar that will receive the most replenishment today. SKATES: Many in Oslo put on their skates on the Fourth of Advent. Also on Christmas Eve, it is reported to drop to minus 13 degrees in the capital. Photo: Heiko Junge / NTB – There are snow cities in Trondheim today and tomorrow, so Trøndelag and further north will also get a little top-up if it’s cold enough. The same applies in the interior of Western Norway. If it is cold enough, precipitation will come as snow, explains Thaule.
