This is what language director Åse Wetås writes on Twitter. Bokmålsordboka and Nynorskordboka have been updated with the new word. Here it says that the pronoun refers to a person when gender is unknown, insignificant or is kept hidden, and to refer to a person who prefers the pronoun “hen” over “he” or “ho”.
