What does the music you listen to say about you? A study conducted by scientists from Queen Mary University of London analyzed tens of thousands of songs released from 1960 to 2023, revealing a compelling conclusion: pop music has become increasingly more depressing over the decades.

The Analysis: Almost 400,000 Songs
The team examined over 380,000 songs spanning from 1960 to 2030, drawing from two significant music archives. The first, the WASABI database, featured more than 377,000 English-language songs released between 1960 and 2010. The second consisted of approximately 5,500 songs from the Billboard charts that extended to 2023.
Focusing on Language
To manage this colossal dataset, researchers used AI and language analysis techniques. Their focus wasn’t just on musical complexity, but rather on the emotional language within the lyrics. They aimed to uncover if songs were primarily about themes of fidelity and friendship, or issues like conflict, deception, and rebellion.
Findings: A Clear Shift in Themes
The research concluded that modern pop music is significantly darker than that of previous generations. By comparing lyrics from the 1960s to those of today, the study identified an increase in expressions of moral vices, alongside a notable decline in themes of virtue.
The Shift in Expressions
Today’s lyrics are predominantly reflective of hurt, infidelities, and degradation—much more so than in the 60s when purity and mutual care were celebrated. This trend remains consistent across the various genres present in mainstream music.
Data-Driven Insights
The study offered staggering statistics: references to degradation surged by 52%, damage by 49%, and deception by 48%. Similarly, the Billboard charts illustrated analogous increases—deception soared nearly 71% and degradation by 62%, demonstrating an unsettling trend.
The Decrease in Virtue Statements
Conversely, mentions of virtuous behaviors saw a decline. Themes surrounding care for others decreased by 24%, while purity and loyalty dropped by 12% and 11%, respectively.
