1 December 2022 at 03:18 Guatemala’s Easter celebration gets world heritage status Guatemala’s colorful Easter celebration, which combines Mayan traditions with Catholicism, has been added to Unesco’s world heritage list. The celebration, which stretches over six weeks, reaches its climax in Easter week, with spectacular processions, vigils and colorful carpets of sawdust and flower petals in the streets, not least in the city of Antigua. Culture Minister Felipe Aguilar points out in connection with the Unesco listing that Guatemala’s traditions, such as food, music and art, are the result of a cultural fusion between Catholicism from Europe and the traditions and beliefs of the Mayan civilization, from which almost half of the country’s inhabitants are descended.
