On Tuesday, she explained herself in the Østre Innlandet district court about her son’s tragic death. The little boy, aged one year and eight months, was killed by a Rottweiler belonging to her then mother-in-law. – I trusted her. To me, it has seemed as if she has kept dogs and children apart. She reassured me all the time that she was strict about this, said the woman in court. The boy’s mother said that she herself had been afraid of the dog for a long time. She told of two incidents where children had been injured by the dog. In one case in February 2019, she was sure that one of the sons would have been killed if her husband had not intervened so resolutely. She took it as if the rottweiler attacked and dragged her son by the head across the floor. The man must have had the dog thrown away. According to the woman, both the mother-in-law and others are said to have expressed on various occasions that the dog should be euthanized. Nevertheless, it did not happen. – I feel she has protected the dog the whole time. When the dog has done something, she has always explained it by saying that it had a reason for it, said the boy’s mother. WAS PUT DOWN: Both the rottweiler and the accused woman’s other dog were put down after the tragic incident on 5 June 2021 in Brumunddal. In court, she said that she feels a lot of anger and sadness. – I am angry because they did not listen to me and took me seriously when I was worried about the dog, she said. The woman believes it is important that responsibility for the death is placed and that it is therefore right to prosecute the former mother-in-law. Legal aid lawyer Inger Johanne Reiestad Hansen represents the boy’s mother. She has notified a compensation claim of around NOK 200,000 on behalf of her client. – After hearing the defendant’s explanation yesterday, we are even more certain that she has acted grossly negligently, says Reiestad Hansen. The public assistance lawyer says that it has been very difficult for the boy’s mother to appear in court – She has dreaded this very much, says Reistad Hansen. The parents of the deceased boy have separated after the tragic accident. They each have their own solicitor in court and must have somewhat different opinions about what has happened in the past. This is stated by legal aid lawyer Tore Müller Famestad, who represents the father of the murdered boy. – My client must explain himself here in court. But he has not submitted any compensation claim and he otherwise wants to be involved as little as possible in this case, says Famestad. The defendant explained himself in court on Monday. She then apologized for what had happened and said she did not see her dog as a threat. – I did not see him as a dangerous dog. He went with me. The children patted him, the woman said in court. The woman explained on Monday about several incidents where the dog is said to have bitten or injured children. She still thought there was no reason to euthanize him. The defendant was not present in court on Tuesday because of the burden it entails for her. The neighbor explained himself The neighbor of the accused woman explained himself in court. She was the first to come to help during the dog attack. She told about the dramatic minutes until they managed to free the boy. She also said that one of her own children was very afraid of the big Rottweiler. Among other things, the child did not dare to use the normal entrance to their house, but instead entered the back to avoid the dog. She herself was not afraid of the dog, but she thought it could be dangerous. – I could go into her garden where the dog was, but I don’t think I would recommend others to do that. It’s a rottweiler. It is bred to defend its territory, the neighbor said. A senior police officer also told about the impressions that met her when they arrived at the house. Together with the boy’s father, who also came quickly to the scene, she attempted resuscitation. The first police officer said that the now accused woman was completely covered in blood from top to toe and that she was in shock.
