Anthony Hopkins Unveils First Classical Music Album at 88

Renowned performer Anthony Hopkins has stepped into the world of classical music, signing with the prestigious label Decca Classics. His debut album, titled Life Is a Dream, is set for release on August 21. This remarkable project showcases over six decades of Hopkins’ musical compositions, recorded with the acclaimed conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the prestigious Philharmonia Orchestra.

First Preview: “Bracken Road”

The first glimpse of the album is courtesy of Hopkins’ composition, Bracken Road, which has recently been released. Part of the 1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra, this piece was composed by an aspiring Hopkins in 1963, during his early acting days at the Liverpool Playhouse. It draws from his nostalgic memories of Margam, located in south Wales.

A Milestone in a Storied Career

This new musical endeavor brings a fascinating dimension to his illustrious film career. At the age of 88, Hopkins began playing the piano at just four years old, eventually mastering pieces by Beethoven and Chopin. As a teenager, he even composed music for local productions, marking the early stages of a lifelong passion for music.

“Music was my first wish, my first desire,” Hopkins remarked, emphasizing his enduring relationship with the art form. “I have been composing music all my life. Some of these pieces have lived with me for decades, and I still return to them.”

Inspirations Behind the Works

The compositions in Life Is a Dream are deeply rooted in personal memories, celebrating the landscapes of his childhood in Wales. For instance, Bracken Road evokes the streets, fields, and mountains of his family home from the 1940s, while another piece titled My Fatherland serves as a heartfelt tribute to his Welsh heritage.

Reflecting on his past, Hopkins created a narrative through his music, honoring his humble beginnings. “I am the son of my father, the baker,” he disclosed, highlighting the significant memories from his upbringing in Port Talbot and the cinema that fueled his imagination.

Collaboration with Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonia Orchestra

The album is brought to life under the expert direction of Gustavo Dudamel, who leads the Philharmonia Orchestra alongside talented soloists, including cellist Gregorio Nieto and classical pianist Sergio Tiempo. In Hopkins’ own words, collaborating with Decca has been “the honor of a lifetime,” symbolizing a unique fusion of his artistic pursuits.

A Legacy in Music

Hopkins is not new to the realm of music; in 2012, he won a Classic Brit Award for album of the year for And the Waltz Goes On. He also made his live debut with the concert Life Is a Dream in Saudi Arabia in 2025, performed by the British Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Describing Hopkins as an artist whose “creative voice transcends any single medium,” Dudamel praised the emotional depth and craftsmanship of his compositions, noting that the actor approaches music with “the heart of a storyteller and the instinct of a poet.”

A Celebration of a Lifelong Journey

Reflecting on his signing with Decca, Laura Monks, president of the label, regarded it as a celebration of a lifetime devoted to music. She expressed that experiencing Hopkins’ creative process in London was nothing short of unrepeatable, further solidifying Hopkins’ place in the legacy of both film and classical music.
