Arild Hermstad was elected the new leader of the Green Party during the party’s extraordinary national meeting on Saturday. He succeeds Une Bastholm, who surprisingly resigned during the Arendal week in August. He has acted as a substitute for Bastholm since her exit from politics. Lan Marie Berg was elected by acclamation as deputy chairperson, and thus takes over for Hermstad. Berg was appointed by the election committee in advance, and had no opposing candidates. Hermstad received 102 votes, while opposing candidate Kristoffer Robin Haug received 101 votes. Only one vote separated the two leadership candidates. – Thank you very much for your trust. It’s absolutely fantastic. And many congratulations to Kristoffer, for that election campaign. You have run a fantastic election campaign, says Hermstad to the national meeting, and gives opposing candidate Haug a hug on stage. Hermstad was thanked for the trust in advance by the party’s election committee, and was praised by committee leader Trude Thy for her work for the party. – Arild has the caliber we need from our party leader, to continue to develop, grow, win elections and reach new heights, Thy said of the new party leader before the election was held. Kristoffer Robin Haug lost the battle for the MDG leadership post by one vote. Haug talked about charting a new course for the party. – We must give people a credible version of what good green lives look like in the future. We must show that we are something completely unique, he said, and urged the national meeting to vote for the candidate who made them proud to be MDG members.
