In 1914, millions of Europeans were convinced that the war would end before Christmas, leading to the popular phrase “home by Christmas.” This brief optimism starkly contrasted with the reality of a conflict that lasted more than four years, fundamentally transforming Europe.

Fast forward a century, and the war in Ukraine has extended well beyond initial forecasts. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, the Kremlin anticipated a rapid victory that would see the fall of Kyiv within days. As of now, the war stretches on, having officially surpassed 1,569 days—making it one of the longest and most consequential conflicts in recent European history.
Concerns of a Prolonged Struggle
What began as an assault to swiftly dismantle the Ukrainian government has evolved into a protracted struggle. Many Ukrainians are apprehensively aware that they may soon face another historical benchmark—the timeline of World War II.

Historians caution against drawing simplistic parallels with global conflicts due to differences in scale and casualties. However, the war in Ukraine bears enough resemblances to World War I, marking it as its closest modern parallel.
