Jairo Vélez: Rising Star of the Peruvian Team

Jairo Vélez is experiencing an impressive run as the leading scorer for the Peruvian national team under the guidance of coach Mano Menezes. With four goals in four friendly matches, including a notable performance against Spain, his rise has captivated fans and experts alike.

Early Beginnings at El Carmen Academy

Vélez’s journey has not been without its challenges. His first coach, Ángel Fajardo, recalls the young midfielder’s early years at the El Carmen soccer academy, situated in a low-income area in Ecuador. “Greetings from the canton of El Carmen. Jairo Vélez trained with me since he was five years old,” Fajardo shared in an interview with On Wall.

Fajardo noted, “Since he was little, he showed exceptional talent, which prompted me to focus on court exercises, power, and speed.” At the age of eleven, Vélez joined the prestigious Católica de Quito, marking the beginning of a transformative chapter in his life.

A Mentor’s Pride

As Fajardo reflects on his relationship with Vélez, he emphasizes the emotional connection they’ve built over the years: “I consider him like a son. I have watched him grow up, and it fills me with pride.” This bond goes beyond mere mentorship, encapsulating the dedication and commitment they both share to the sport.

A Heartfelt Dedication

Just before a friendly against Honduras, Vélez called Fajardo, revealing the emotional dedication behind his performance. “Prof, your dream is fulfilled. I don’t play for the Ecuadorian national team, but I do play for the Peruvian national team. Those two goals are for you,” he expressed. This moment highlighted the profound mentorship and respect they share.

Fajardo continues to mentor Vélez, reminding him to remain humble. “Keep going, and never forget your roots,” he advises, encouraging him to support the aspiring young players at his academy.

A Legacy Continues

The legacy of Jairo Vélez is set to continue through his nephew, Tiago, who currently trains at the El Carmen academy. The young boy expressed pride in his uncle’s achievements, stating, “When he is free at night, he gives me a lot of good advice. I feel proud to see him, and I wish him to keep scoring goals for Peru.”
