Pope Leo XIV celebrates the first anniversary of his pontificate with a massive visit to southern Italy

The Commemoration of a Historic Day

This Friday, Pope Leo XIV will mark a significant milestone: the first anniversary of his election as the head of the Catholic Church. His celebration will take place in southern Italy, specifically visiting the historic cities of Pompeii and Naples, following a period of heightened tensions with Washington due to his anti-war stance.

Begin the Day in Pompeii

The pontiff, now 70 years old and the first American to hold this esteemed position, will commence his day at the sanctuary of the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii. This revered site is located near the ancient ruins devastated by a volcanic eruption. His arrival is anticipated shortly before 9:00 AM local time.

Prayers and Mass

During his visit, Pope Leo XIV will pray before the glass coffin of Bartolo Longo, a 19th-century saint who once recovered his Catholic faith after a tumultuous past as a satanic priest. He will also lead a mass expected to attract thousands of faithful attendees.

A Warm Welcome from the Faithful

In preparation for the pontiff’s visit, local authorities have arranged a comprehensive welcome operation. Hundreds of chairs have been set up, and sound tests conducted to ensure everything is ready for his speech.

Local resident Nicoletta Barbato, 51, plans to present her five-month-old baby to the pontiff, hoping for a blessing. “I will lift the girl so that the pontiff can see her,” said Barbato.

A Special Connection

The sanctuary holds particular significance for Leo XIV. He mentioned the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii during his first public appearance as pope on May 8, 2025. This visit also reinforces historical ties, as Pope Leo XIII, who inspired Leo XIV’s name, declared the sanctuary a pontifical basilica in 1901.

Celebrating the Legacy of Bartolo Longo

Bartolo Longo, the founder of the sanctuary, was beatified by John Paul II in 1980 and canonized by Pope Leo XIV in October 2025, further linking their legacies.

From Pompeii to Naples

After the activities in Pompeii, Pope Leo XIV will travel by helicopter to Naples to visit the city’s Duomo and pay homage to the relics of San Gennaro, the local patron saint.

Following a speech in the cathedral, he will greet the crowds gathered in Piazza del Plebiscito, one of Italy’s largest squares. The visit will culminate with a message delivered inside the Basilica of San Francisco de Paula.

Looking Ahead

Local authorities anticipate crowds of tens of thousands in both cities, with the pontiff traveling part of the journey in a popemobile to engage with well-wishers. This event marks the beginning of several short pastoral trips planned by the Pope throughout the summer within Italy, following a recent tour of four African countries.

A Tradition of Papal Visits

Pope Leo XIV’s journey aligns with the tradition established by previous popes who prayed at the sanctuary of Pompeii, including Popes Francis, Benedict XVI, and John Paul II.
