So here we are again, just a few weeks before Christmas Eve. Many are already busy buying Christmas presents, surrounded by shining stars and glittering Christmas balls. But the high electricity prices and rising interest rates mean that more people now have less in their accounts, and have to think again. Operations manager at Recircula, Karen Tømte, encourages everyone to buy used Christmas presents, both to save money and for the sake of the environment. These are connected to the new circuit park Sirkula in Hamar. Last year, the shops at the recycling station had a turnover of 5.7 million. This year, at the end of October, they had a turnover of NOK 6.3 million. – We try to give people the feeling of entering a shopping center with several shops and different assortments, says Tømte. Tage Bjerken repairs returned sports equipment in one of the service workshops. – It says something about society when people give up almost unused equipment. Hans Christian Johnson goes over sports equipment and makes sure everything works. – This is a golden opportunity to think a little differently about Christmas presents. Johanne Aspeli says that vintage and retro things from the 50s and 60s are popular. – If you buy used, you can create your very own personal style. Jeanette Nilsen fixes up returned furniture that was actually on the road in the container. – Old furniture will be like new. One of those who chooses to buy used is Swedish Liselott Lindfors. She has experienced that much equipment for children rarely wears out, and can therefore be bought second-hand. – Buying new ski boots for the grandchildren is completely out of the question. Lindfors is a teacher at Norway’s Green Vocational School in Vea in Ringsaker, and thinks we all need to think more about recycling. Want second-hand Christmas gifts The trade association Virke estimates that around NOK 66 billion will be traded before Christmas this year. That’s a lot of kroner, but still less than Norwegians spent on Christmas shopping last year. In the interior, a decrease in turnover of 1.6 per cent is expected. It is especially those aged 15–29 and those over 60 who are positive about receiving second-hand Christmas presents. Men are more positive about receiving a used gift than women. – Not surprisingly, Linn Alicia Slora Kristiansen is a senior adviser at NHO. She is not shocked that Norwegians will spend less on Christmas shopping this year. – It is not surprising that the Christmas trade is going down slightly considering the time we are in. Karen Tømte in Recircula also believes that it is a dilemma, but she wants the entire trade industry to start thinking differently. – The resale shops must be involved in creating a product that lasts longer, that can be repaired, and they should be able to offer simple parts if something breaks.
