The Attack in Cajibío: A Tragic Incident

The recent terrorist attack on the Pan-American Highway, specifically in the El Túnel sector near Cajibío, Cauca, has been confirmed to have resulted in 21 fatalities and around 56 injuries. This devastating news was confirmed by the Minister of Defense, Pedro Sánchez Suárez, who described the incident as one of the most significant attacks recorded in southwestern Colombia.

A Deadly Incident

Minister Sánchez Suárez noted that the magnitude of the explosive charge used was substantial, leading to a tragic increase in the death toll. He stressed that the attack demonstrated the capacity for destruction that organized criminal groups possess, particularly along major corridors like the Pan-American Highway. He further indicated that two additional casualties were due to injuries sustained and subsequently confirmed at local care centers.

Government Response and Accountability

The Minister lamented that official troops were less than a kilometer from the explosion site, actively engaged in restoring public order. This raised serious questions about the attackers’ intentions, as they appeared to target civilians intentionally. “They knew exactly before activating the explosive that they were going to kill civilians,” he stated, underlining the premeditated nature of the assault.

Sánchez Suárez pointed out the involvement of individuals who may have observed the suspicious activity without reporting it, suggesting a level of complicity or fear within the local population. He emphasized the community’s role in helping authorities prevent such tragedies by remaining vigilant.

Challenges in Preventing Terrorism

Despite significant military presence in the region—13 armored platoons and advanced surveillance systems—the minister acknowledged the challenges in entirely preventing terrorist attacks due to their unpredictable nature. The government has plans to strengthen its presence further by adding two additional armored platoons expected by May.

Identifying the Threat

The Defense Minister attributed the surge in violence to FARC dissident structures, mentioning alias Marlon as a crucial figure behind recent attacks. A reward of up to 5,000 million pesos has been offered for information leading to his capture. He underscored that the attacks on civilian targets are not signs of strength but rather of desperation and weakness on the part of these criminal organizations.

The Underlying Issues: Illegal Economies

Sánchez Suárez pointed to the root of these violent acts as stemming from structural issues, predominantly fueled by illegal economies such as drug trafficking and illegal mining. He likened the situation to a criminal iceberg, where the visible attacks are merely the tip of a larger problem involving pervasive illicit activities.

Community Involvement in Countering Violence

The minister emphasized the importance of community involvement in providing information and reporting suspicious behavior. He reiterated that the effectiveness of terrorism relies heavily on its ability to blend in with the civilian population. The government’s message was clear: “We do not bend… surrender is not an option.”

In conclusion, the attack on the Pan-American Highway serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict between the state and illegal armed groups in Colombia’s southwest. Despite previously reported declines in violence, this incident highlights the persistent threats that continue to undermine security and safety in the region.
