El Salvador +: A Significant Contribution to the Diaspora
The Government of El Salvador has recently launched an initiative called El Salvador +, aiming to provide essential services to Salvadorans living abroad. This program kicked off in Silver Spring, Maryland, with the primary goal of bridging the gap between the government and Salvadorans residing outside of their homeland.
Strengthening Community Ties
Initiated under the administration of President Nayib Bukele, the El Salvador + tour seeks to enhance the ties between the Salvadoran government, the private sector, and the diaspora. Led by Patricia Nathaly Godinez, the Vice Minister of Diaspora and Human Mobility, this initiative is a call to action for Salvadorans living abroad to engage with their home country.
The inaugural event took place simultaneously at consulates across Los Angeles, Fresno, and San Bernardino between April 20 and 22. Godinez emphasized that El Salvador Services Program + is a vital state strategy designed to ensure that Salvadorans worldwide have access to comprehensive services, no matter their location.

During the event, attendees were able to access a variety of services. These services included:

- Investor Guidance
- Household Goods Processing
- Opportunities for Civic Participation
The initiative aims to support the integration of Salvadorans abroad and facilitate a dignified return for those choosing to come back. It also encourages political and civic participation, inviting Salvadorans to have a voice in national matters.
A Multi-Institutional Collaboration
This groundbreaking initiative involves the collaboration of over 70 institutions, offering more than 150 services, which have already benefited countless individuals. Godinez highlighted that the state coordination behind this initiative creates genuine opportunities for Salvadorans living outside their home country.
Raising Awareness and Participation
Speaking at the event, Godinez acknowledged the diaspora’s critical role in the nation’s development and reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding and improving program coverage. She urged participation from Salvadorans until the end of the tour on April 22, with additional engagements planned in Woodbridge, Virginia and San Francisco on April 23 and 24.
The Salvadoran Diaspora in the U.S.
According to a report by the Pew Research Center, Salvadorans make up the third largest Hispanic population in the United States, with more than 2.5 million identifying themselves as Salvadoran in 2021. This marks a significant increase from 710,000 in 2000. The report also noted that 1.3 million of this population is foreign-born, demonstrating a 147% rise compared to two decades ago.
Demographic Insights
The geographical distribution of Salvadorans in the U.S. shows a predominant presence in California (32%) and Texas (14%), with significant communities in Maryland and New York (8% each) and Virginia (7%). Notably, 56% of Salvadorans have reported being fluent in English, while over 52% have lived in the U.S. for more than two decades. Economic data indicates that the median annual personal income for those over 16 is approximately USD 30,000.
