Kidnapping Details

Rogelio Poblete Zamora, the director of the Decentralized Public Organization of Malinalco Drinking Water, was abducted by armed assailants on the morning of April 15. He was reportedly traveling in a cherry-colored truck when he was forcibly removed from his vehicle and transferred into another. As of now, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Immediate Response and Search Efforts

The alarming incident has prompted a substantial search operation in the southern region of the State of Mexico. Both state and federal authorities have mobilized their resources and initiated operations in areas such as San Nicolás and El Palmar de Guadalupe.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the perpetrators utilized the Toluca-Taxco highway as they headed towards Chalma. Tragically, Poblete lost contact with family and municipal authorities at around 9:30 a.m. on the same day.

As of this writing, no official search mission has been launched by the Person Search Commission in the State of Mexico, nor has there been a public statement from the organization he leads.

Criminal Activity in the Region

The area surrounding the kidnapping is known for the activities of dangerous criminal factions, specifically The Michoacana Family and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The municipality of Malinalco is often regarded as a potential hotspot for criminal activities.

Recently, instances of kidnapping have surged, further exacerbating public fear. Not long before Poblete’s abduction, Taxco’s municipal president and his father were kidnapped but later rescued in a coordinated effort by federal authorities. The Secretaria de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) linked this kidnapping to members of La Familia Michoacana.

A Growing Pattern of Violence

In recent weeks, the local community has witnessed a rise in violence. For instance, the family and friends of a tamales vendor who was abducted took drastic measures by blocking the Tenancingo-Chalma highway to demand his safe return.

The kidnapping of Poblete is indicative of a larger trend concerning the safety of municipal water organization officials. Several similar attacks have transpired recently, including:

  • On March 26, Roberto Castañeda, the director of the Drinking Water, Sewerage, and Sanitation Board in Irapuato, was murdered during an armed assault.
  • In 2022, Guillermo Adolfo Galeana, the former Director of Finance of the Drinking Water and Sewerage Commission of Acapulco was kidnapped but managed to escape.
  • In 2019, Jesús Reyes Consuelo, head of OPDAPAS in Zinacantepec, faced an attempted abduction.

This alarming pattern suggests a systemic threat faced by officials in the drinking water sector and raises concerns about the efficacy of law enforcement in these regions.
