– It is a full moon, it is low in the sky in addition to being close to us. That way, you can say that it is a bit special. That’s what Håkon Dahle, astrophysicist and researcher at the University of Oslo, says. The moon goes in an oblong orbit around the earth. A so-called ellipse. One to three times a year, the full moon comes unusually close to the earth in its orbit. When it hits the full moon, we get a so-called supermoon. It will both look bigger and shine a little stronger. And the first supermoon this year you can catch the night of June 14. Supermoon in 2022: June 14, 2022 July 13, 2022 – The full moon tomorrow and July will be the days of the year when the moon looks greatest in the sky. But not only is the moon closer to the earth, it also looks much closer than it actually is. SUPER MOON: The photo was taken in Åfjord on April 27, 2021. Photo: Knut Dreiås Optical illusion When there is a full moon in the summer, it is very low in the sky. It creates an optical illusion. – I think it is more of a psychological effect in the brain. When the moon is low, it looks a little bigger. Then you see hills and ridges in the foreground, then you have a reference. Then it seems bigger. But there is one problem. Because the moon is so far down the horizon, it will not be visible throughout the country. If you live in the northernmost counties, you can safely go to bed. BRIGHTER: If you are lucky, you get clear weather and good visibility, and can enjoy the big moon. Photo: Håkon Eliassen / news But if you live on the border with Nordland county, there is hope. – It should be possible to see it all the way south in Nordland, but then you have to have a clear horizon and nothing in the line of sight. But already tomorrow it may be too late. – Even in Oslo it is low now, Dahle explains. Clouds on the horizon If you are a northerner and wish you could see it, the meteorologist can disappoint you twice. The cloud cover probably would not have let you see the supermoon anyway. That’s what Ingrid Berntsen, meteorologist on duty at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, says. – In Trønderlag there is not much chance of seeing it, either. CLOUDY: A supermoon over the old city bridge in Trondheim will probably not be visible tonight. Photo: Sven-Erik Knoff But there are two parts of the country that can pack a camera and tripod tonight. – In Eastern and Southern Norway, there are good chances to see it. The cloud cover will probably vary slightly through the night. In Western Norway you can get a glare from time to time, but there is a lot of clouds and periodic precipitation. – So it is Eastern and Southern Norway that can see it with certainty.
