Expands charges against driver after fatal accident that claimed three lives – news Møre og Romsdal – Local news, TV and radio

Three women died in the head-on collision in the Blindheim tunnel in Ålesund this summer. Immediately after the accident, a woman in her 20s was charged with careless driving. The police are now expanding the charge to negligent homicide. – What causes the search to be expanded is that we have received the accident report from the Norwegian Road Administration and thus know more about the speed and acceleration of the car inside the tunnel, says police attorney Magne Baltzer Kvalvik at the Møre og Romsdal police district. It mentions the conditions of the two cars, the road, the reading of data from the airbag module in the car – and not least speed and acceleration. – What can you say about the speed and acceleration? – I think it is best not to say too much about it now. But what we can say is that the speed has been above the legal speed limit in the Blindheim tunnel. He does not wish to say anything about how the woman reacts to the extension of the search. Informed about the extension The woman in her 20s was from before the charge for Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act and should have been informed on Monday about the extension of the charge to Section 281 of the Criminal Code, reckless homicide. During the day, the woman was also questioned again at the police station in Ålesund, the police say. The police attorney says that the next of kin have also been informed that the charges have been extended. Kvalvik believes that a possible indictment will be ready before Christmas, and that there could therefore be a trial in the new year. – We hope the report, together with the video from the tunnel and the investigation in general, will help to give the next of kin as good an answer as possible to what happened, he says. For the time being, news has not been able to get a comment from the woman’s lawyer. The tunnel is located approximately one mile from the center of Ålesund, close to the Moa shopping centre. There are two lanes in the tunnel. The tunnel had to be closed for several hours after the two cars had collided.
