Sheinbaum promises to expand bean collection to 96 thousand tons

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has announced an extension of the bean collection program in Zacatecas, aiming to maintain a guaranteed price of 27 pesos per kilogram. The detailed modifications are expected after Easter, primarily to address the demands of producers who are protesting and requesting the delivery of 150 thousand sacks, given current limitations preventing the collection of more than 4 thousand tons of grain.

Program Expansion and Record Goals

Recent reports indicate that the bean collection program in Zacatecas has already surpassed 90 thousand tons and has recently been expanded to a target of 96 thousand tons. This milestone is significant for the state and has successfully enabled thousands of producers to secure more favorable conditions for selling their crops, according to local authorities.

The announcement coincided with the inauguration of the “Beatriz González Ortega” bean bagging facility in Bonnet, located 166 kilometers from the state capital.

Producers and Farmers Raise Concerns

The President elaborated on the Food for Wellbeing Program, responsible for collecting beans from Zacatecas, Durango, and Nayarit. The program aims to distribute these beans in Wellness stores across the nation. Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that the support is provided directly to farmers, eliminating any intermediaries or involvement from political figures.

However, the announcement comes amid growing tensions. Attendees voiced dissatisfaction, claiming exclusion from the program, which has led to potential legal disputes among producers. Farmers are currently camped out in the Parade ground of the capital, demanding state support and supplies necessary for grain collection, receiving food aid from sympathetic citizens amidst ongoing demonstrations during the Cultural Festival 2026.

These protests have persisted for over 10 days, acquiring backing from social and educational groups affiliated with Section 58 of the SNTE, who are advocating for stockpiles and fair bean prices.

Impending Actions from Producers

An extended meeting, lasting more than eight hours, between producers and state authorities regarding seed collection and delivery ended without a resolution. Representatives from seven municipalities have warned that without adequate responses, they will escalate protests on Heroes of Chapultepec Boulevard to apply additional pressure on the state government.

Cultural Significance of Beans in Mexico

Beans, celebrated on National Bean Day, have become a staple of the Mexican identity and cuisine. Despite a noted decrease in bean consumption in recent years, these legumes remain a rich source of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Mexico is recognized as the center of origin for beans, hosting 57 of the 150 existing species, with 31 being endemic.

Health-wise, beans are loaded with soluble fiber, which aids in regulating blood sugar levels and cholesterol. Their nutrient content benefits various bodily functions, contributing to skin health, nervous system support, and digestion. Additionally, their folic acid and iron contents assist in protein metabolism and anemia prevention, while their lower animal protein consumption correlates with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.
