Google Pixel 10a: A Comprehensive Analysis

The return of the affordable and compact Pixel has evoked mixed feelings. While Google’s catalog refresh is a positive sign, maintaining seven years of software guarantees is even better. Upon examining the design, I immediately appreciated the absence of camera protrusions, a notable improvement. However, the pressing question remains: can the Pixel 10a free itself from being nearly identical in hardware to the Google Pixel 9a?

Testing each new Pixel is one of my favorite moments of the season. The Pixel 10a was no exception, despite the déjà vu with its spec sheet. Google knows how to cater to the mid-range market, as I’ve observed year after year. After just a moment with the new arrival, I knew it would be one of my blind recommendations.

Design: A Compact Marvel

Despite not making substantial changes to the hardware, Google has made noticeable improvements in design. The Pixel 10a eliminates camera bumps, resulting in a sleek mobile design that doesn’t wobble when placed on a flat surface, an upgrade over the Pixel 9a. Its compact size is a breath of fresh air in an era dominated by oversized screens. Although the phone features slightly larger bezels, it is a comfortable fit in hand.

The body is robust and made of aluminum, but the plastic back reduces the perception of quality. This choice tends to feel less premium and somewhat gives an impression of flexing when pressed. However, it maintains wireless charging and IP68 protection.

Display: A Clear and Responsive Screen

While not the best display Google has produced, the Pixel 10a’s screen is well-suited for its category. The resolution is sufficient, and it boasts a pixel density of 422 ppi, providing good clarity in various lighting conditions. The display supports a refresh rate of 60-120 Hz, ensuring smooth interactions.

Performance: Minor Update Costing Potential

The Google Pixel 10a features the same Tensor G4 processor as the Pixel 9a. While this does not significantly impact daily performance, it lacks the fresh optimization potential offered by higher-end processors in competitors’ devices. However, it still handles tasks smoothly, including demanding graphical applications like Genshin Impact.

Camera: Solid Performance

The Pixel 10a’s camera setup remains consistent with its predecessor, including a 48 MP main sensor and a 13 MP ultra-wide sensor. While it lacks a dedicated telephoto lens, it compensates with digital zoom capabilities. The camera excels in daylight, delivering high-quality images that require minimal post-processing.

Battery Life: Reliable, Yet Room for Improvement

With a 5,100 mAh battery, the Pixel 10a delivers reliable performance, lasting up to two days on moderate usage. Battery drain is generally low, although high-performance tasks can escalate energy consumption substantially.

Software: Clean and Updatable

The Pixel 10a runs on a clean version of Android 16 with seven years of updates and security enhancements, ensuring longevity. It opts for minimal additional software, which enhances usability.

Conclusion: Should You Buy the Google Pixel 10a?

Ultimately, the Google Pixel 10a stands strong as a contender in the mid-range segment. It excels in camera quality and software support, with a starting price of €549. However, its similarities to the Pixel 9a may prompt potential buyers to wait for discounts or explore alternatives. If you prioritize a compact design combined with excellent photography capabilities, the Pixel 10a is worth considering.
