Revival of a Classic: Micromanía Returns in Print

As the traditional video game press steadily declines, a few exceptions continue to thrive, particularly those that cater to nostalgia among veteran gamers. Made with Pixels has embraced this trend, not only by releasing a dedicated retro magazine named Pixels but also by reviving iconic publications like Microhobby and the much-anticipated return of Micromanía—now in sheet format.

A Brief Hiatus

Micromanía, a staple of the gaming community, ceased publication in January 2024 after over 24 months of silence. Initially focused on 8-bit machines like the Spectrum 48K, Amstrad CPC, and Commodore 64, the magazine has had several transformations throughout its history, including a popular tabloid phase that appealed to a broader audience during the rise of 16-bit gaming and a later focus on the PC realm.

A Mixed Return

In its new incarnation, Micromanía will be slightly smaller than before, measuring 25cm x 35cm—larger than most magazines but more manageable than its original form. This bimonthly publication will be available in digital format for €5.99 and in print for €11.99, or both for €13.99. Its layout and design will echo the classic style, promising content reminiscent of its heyday. Readers can expect analyses of time-honored gaming systems such as the Amiga, Atari ST, Game Boy, and others, as well as updates on the current retro gaming scene, gameplay tips, and game maps.

What’s Inside the First Issue?

Anticipation is high for the first issue, which will feature:

  1. Cover Story on Monkey Island: A comprehensive report on Ron Gilbert and the entire saga.
  2. Exclusive Posters: Two full-size posters included in the middle of each issue.
  3. Damned Castile Requiem: An exclusive review, complete with downloadable demos for Mega Drive and Dreamcast.
  4. Interviews with Original Editors: Insights from the creators of classic publications like Microhobby and Hobby Consolas.
  5. Turbo Girl Reunion: A nostalgic nod featuring the original cover, bringing back memories from 38 years ago.

The Team Behind Micromanía

What makes this revival particularly exciting is the team involved. Spearheaded by José Luis Sanz, formerly of Hobby Consolas, the editorial board is populated by dynamic figures from the golden age of Spanish video game journalism. This ensemble includes Marcos García, former director of Superjuegos and Revista Oficial Playstation, alongside notable editors like Jesús Martínez del Vas, José Luis Rodríguez, J. Luis Molina, and Juanjo Muñoz. Their collective experience promises a writing style that aligns with the beloved reviews and articles of the past.

A Nod to Nostalgia

While the print media landscape faces challenges, many surviving publications are capitalizing on retro content. Micromanía’s return speaks directly to those who grew up reading it—a lucrative audience of nostalgic forty-somethings eager to revisit cherished memories. Alongside other retro-centered titles, such as the Spanish edition of Retro Gamer, Micromanía is poised to reignite interest in classic gaming culture.

In this era of digital dominance, the return of Micromanía serves as a heartening reminder that there is still a place for tangible, lovingly crafted media in the gaming community. It maintains a vibrant connection to the past while promising new content for dedicated fans.
