Great fortunes are not distributed evenly across the planet. A few countries concentrate the majority of the world’s billionaires, while others barely contribute names to that exclusive club.

The geographical distribution of extreme wealth leaves us with a snapshot that gives clues about which countries or fiscal policies encourage capital accumulation and are the perfect breeding ground for generating wealth. In 2025, the wealth gap between the average population and the great fortunes has skyrocketed, but it has also revealed significant differences between countries.

The comparative graph prepared by Visual Capitalist allows you to compare this distribution in a very visual and direct way. The graph is powered by data provided by the study ‘Billionaire Ambitions Report 2025‘ prepared by UBS and the consulting firm PwC, where an annual record of the number of billionaires is maintained, people with assets exceeding one billion dollars at the year’s beginning.

A Billionaire Factory

To no one’s surprise, the US dominates by a wide margin the world ranking of countries according to the number of billionaires. The country hosts 924 people with a net worth of over a billion dollars, a figure that nearly doubles that of the second-ranked player. This concentration translates into an increase in joint wealth, as the sum of US fortunes reaches approximately 6.9 trillion dollars.

China follows in second place with 470 billionaires. However, despite this concentration equating to nearly 50% of the US billionaires, their combined wealth stands at around 1.8 trillion dollars—almost four times less than that of the US.

Amancio Ortega has been donating millions of euros to Spanish hospitals for years

India holds the third position, boasting 188 billionaires, whose assets exceed one billion dollars. The comparative analysis between India and China highlights an asynchronous growth pattern: while India has only a third of China’s billionaires, its sum capital of 888 billion dollars is about half of what China has.

The European Map of Billionaires

Europe presents a complex internal distribution. According to UBS data, Germany leads the continent with 156 billionaires. The combined fortune in Germany amounts to 692 billion dollars, distancing itself significantly from the proportions of the US and India. The UK follows closely in fifth place with 91 billionaires, while Switzerland hosts 84.

The emir of Qatar wants to buy a historic villa in Sardinia

Italy ranks eighth with 61 billionaires, while France sits in thirteenth position with fewer billionaires. Nevertheless, sales crises in the Chinese and Asian luxury markets have adversely impacted these countries’ wealth, affecting well-known brands like LVMH and Ferrari.

Spain Takes Positions

Spain, while not among Europe’s top countries for billionaires, has witnessed growth in recent years. According to the 2025 UBS data, Spain has 32 billionaires, ranking seventeenth globally. Their wealth collectively reaches about $213.1 billion, a 21.5% increase from previous years.

Despite these figures, there is an uneven distribution of wealth, with notable figures like Amancio Ortega holding a significant portion of this collective fortune.
