Unexpected Internet Outage

Yesterday, January 19, 2026, I found myself in front of my computer, ready to tackle my workday. Just minutes into my tasks, an unexpected surprise struck: the websites I was trying to access failed to load.

The Wi-Fi connection had been cut off. Despite attempts to reset my network, including the all-too-familiar power cycle of the router, my efforts were in vain. My wife confirmed that she, too, couldn’t connect to the internet. An unsettling thought crossed my mind; this was not a good sign.

Contacting Customer Service

I immediately called O2 customer service, only to discover they don’t provide support until 9 a.m. unless it involves a lost or stolen device. Luckily, I still had access to mobile data. By tethering my mobile to my work computer, I managed to continue working with little disruption, as 5G bandwidth offered enough speed for my tasks.

Shortly after nine, I called O2 again. Upon sharing my issue, the representative informed me that there was a service interruption in my area. My heart sank; it was not just my connection but a larger issue affecting others. However, O2 provided me with an unlimited data bonus in the interim.

After receiving confirmation that they were working on the issue, I hoped for a swift resolution. However, much to my dismay, it had been over 24 hours, and the problem persisted.

The A-5 Works: A Recurrent Issue

As the hours dragged on without a solution, I intermittently checked my router, restarting it in hopes of restoring connectivity. Nothing changed. Frustrated, I sought information regarding the cause of the outage and stumbled across a shocking revelation: the underground works of the A-5 had disrupted service, leaving multiple Movistar and O2 customers offline in areas such as Aluche and Campamento.

A Pattern of Disruptions

This incident was not isolated. Previous occurrences in July, August, and November also cited the same reason: the ongoing underground works on the A-5. Yet, the exact cause of these disruptions remains unclear.

Recovering from these works has led to various side effects, including congestion on Metro Line 10, deteriorating air quality, and heavy traffic in the areas impacted by the construction. While the project progresses—recently, two tunnel sections were connected—the complications of the A-5 works on daily life for residents are hard to ignore.

As per recent announcements, the tunnel is expected to be completed by April 2026, but traffic is set to continue until the end of the year. My hope is that connectivity and daily inconveniences will stabilize once the project concludes.

In the meantime, I remain connected through mobile data, pondering the unforeseen toll of urban development on essential services like internet connectivity.
