Falcon’s Flight: The New Queen of Roller Coasters
Formula Rossa of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, which previously held the title of the world’s most spectacular roller coaster, has just been dethroned. Enter Falcon’s Flight, the breathtaking centerpiece of Saudi Arabia’s recently inaugurated Six Flags Qiddiya City. This amusement park, located on a rugged desert cliff just outside Riyadh, boasts a striking blend of adrenaline and state-of-the-art engineering.
The First Six Flags Outside North America
Covering an immense area of 320,000 square meters, Six Flags Qiddiya City is a monumental achievement. It features 28 attractions, five of which claim world records. Uniquely, it marks the first Six Flags park outside the United States, Canada, and Mexico, yet it adheres to brand standards that ensure the iconic experience Six Flags is known for.
Backed by an investment of over $1 billion from the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the park aims to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy away from oil reliance. This massive project aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to expand the kingdom’s economic horizons by investing in sectors like tourism and entertainment.
Falcon’s Flight Shatters Records
The crown jewel of Six Flags Qiddiya, Falcon’s Flight, stands as the highest, fastest, and longest roller coaster globally. It can reach mind-boggling speeds of 250 km/h, climbs to an impressive height of 195 meters, and incorporates the rugged Tuwaiq cliff for a staggering vertical drop of 158 meters. The full ride spans 4.2 kilometers and lasts almost four pulsating minutes, promising an adrenaline rush unlike any other.
Impressive Economic Impact
According to Abdullah al-Dawood, CEO of Qiddiya Investment Company, the park is projected to create 7,000 jobs and contribute approximately $686 million to the kingdom’s GDP this year alone. By 2030, these expectations scale to 85,000 jobs and an astounding $11.73 billion annual contribution to GDP, with projected annual visitor numbers hitting 48 million.
More Than Just an Amusement Park
Officially opening its doors on December 31, 2025, the park is set to become a centerpiece for more than just thrill rides, charging adult visitors an admission fee of $87. As the development continues through the years, additional attractions like Aquarabia, large-scale sports facilities, and cultural venues will enhance the area’s appeal.
A Broader Vision for Saudi Arabia
With fluctuating oil prices influencing the kingdom’s economic strategy, projects like Qiddiya stand as critical components of a larger vision that includes hosting global events such as Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Although facing delays and budget recalibrations, the promising start with Six Flags Qiddiya City could play a vital role in attracting tourists to the region.
In summary, Falcon’s Flight and the expansive Six Flags Qiddiya City represent Saudi Arabia’s ambitious leap into global tourism and entertainment, marking a significant chapter in its diversification efforts.
