According to The Times of India, official authorities report that at least 40 have died. The number is constantly increasing. There were at least 150 people on the bridge when it collapsed. Around 40 have been rescued, while 60 are still missing. There are different estimates from different media about how many people have fallen into the water. It is feared that many are stuck in bridge debris. The bridge is almost 100 years old and hangs over the Machchhu, a river in the town of Morbi. It is a footbridge and a popular place for locals to have picnics. Vehicles are not allowed on the bridge. According to The Times of India, witnesses report as many as 500 people on the bridge when it collapsed, many of whom are said to have fallen into the water. The Indian online newspaper writes that the fire brigade, aid workers, doctors and ambulances were on site just 15 minutes after the bridge collapse. Rescue workers have been sent to the scene, writes the state’s top political leader, Bhupendra Patel on Twitter. According to Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi should have given instructions to monitor the situation and rescue operations.
