The Character of Henry Patarroyo in “Neighbors”
Released in September 2008, Neighbors quickly became a beloved television production in Colombia. Broadcasting on Caracol Televisión, it showcased the life of Óscar Leal, an extroverted taxi driver whose penchant for partying often creates rifts with his neighbors. Óscar’s chaotic life eventually intertwines with Tatiana Gómez, who serves as his love interest throughout the series.
Among the notable cast members was Fernando Solórzano, who portrayed Henry Patarroyo, a loyal friend to Óscar, distinguished by his limp. This character trait not only made Henry memorable but also became a significant aspect of Solórzano’s performance.
From Adversity to Artistic Inspiration
In a recent interview with See Magazine, Solórzano reflected on how real-life challenges influenced his portrayal of Henry. At the start of filming, he suffered from gout attacks, which hindered his mobility. This physical ailment led him to suggest to the director that they incorporate his limp into the character’s persona.
“We were filming outdoors and I was lame,” Solórzano explained. “The director was worried, but I told him, ‘Let’s make him lame.’ It became a part of Henry’s character.” This creative decision proved fortuitous, as it added depth, vulnerability, and authenticity to Henry’s role in the narrative.

Character Development and Legacy
The effect of introducing Henry’s limp extended beyond mere physicality; it allowed the character to express a poignant vulnerability. Solórzano noted, “The limp helped me a lot for the character, it gave him a certain vulnerability and submission that fit perfectly.” This characterization resonated with viewers, making Henry one of the most beloved figures in the series.
Another key plot development involved Henry’s untimely demise in the show, a decision that stemmed from Solórzano’s opportunity to take on a new role in The Mafia Dolls. This twist not only marked a significant moment in Neighbors but demonstrated the interconnectedness of narrative choices within the network.
Reflection on a Career
Looking back nearly two decades later, Solórzano finds it challenging to watch his earlier performances. “It is very difficult to see oneself after so much time. I see myself and think, ‘I was a child.’” Despite this, the fondness and nostalgia for his character endure, showcasing the impact he made on Colombian television.

Future Projects and Culinary Aspirations
In conversation with Good Morning, Colombia, Solórzano shared that he has been approached multiple times to participate in MasterChef Celebrity but has hesitated due to uncertainty about his cooking skills. While he’s not ruling out the chance of appearing on the show in the future, he emphasized the need for preparation to meet the show’s high standards.
“It bothers me that I don’t have the conditions. I’m training to see if I can manage it,” he remarked. Whether he takes to the kitchen or remains in the acting sphere, Fernando Solórzano’s journey continues to inspire audiences, reminding us of the synergy between personal challenges and artistic expression.
