The reason for the lawsuit is the dispute that arose after Niemann beat Carlsen during the Sinquefield Cup in September. Carlsen withdrew from the tournament the following day. He lost on purpose when the two met again in the Julius Baer Generation Cup a few days later. Niemann admitted after the victory against Carlsen in the Sinquefield Cup that he had cheated as a 12- and 16-year-old. After the Julius Baer Generation Cup, Carlsen stated that he believes Niemann has both cheated more and more recently than he has wanted to admit. Chess.com later came out with a report which they believe shows that Niemann must have cheated in over 100 games. Niemann has been seen in the American championship in recent weeks. There he was finally number nine where he eventually finished in ninth place. Carlsen’s next tournament is the WC in Fischer chess. It starts on Tuesday next week.
