Didier Deschamps and International Selections: A Shift in Strategy

This Thursday at  2 p.m. , Didier Deschamps unveiled the list of  Blues  selected for the upcoming international break. Alongside him, several other national selectors addressed the press to reveal their teams for October. Among these was  Vladimir Petkovic , who faced heavy scrutiny following the last rally of the  Algerian national team . Criticism towards the team’s performance, game strategy, and the management of veteran players by Petkovic became increasingly pronounced with the  African Cup of Nations  approaching.

The Need for Change in the Algerian Squad

Determined to respond to this criticism, the former Bordeaux coach planned to implement numerous changes. Before the announcement of his list,  Algerian media  had already reported that some players, including  Said Benrahma , who had underperformed, would not be included. Simultaneously, the  FAF (Fédération Algérienne de Football)  was working behind the scenes to attract new talent. Notably, one player making headlines is  Luca Zidane , who recently switched his sports nationality to represent Algeria after having played for France in various youth teams.

A First for Luca Zidane

Luca Zidane’s selection marks a significant milestone in his career. The son of legendary player  Zinedine Zidane  is now eligible for selection by Petkovic, who has yet to find his ideal goalkeepers since his appointment. As anticipated, Luca Zidane was indeed called up to join the squad for their upcoming matches against  Somalia  on October 9 and  Uganda  on October 14 as part of the  2026 World Cup qualifiers . He joins fellow goalkeepers  Guendouz  and  Benbot , leading to an intriguing competition for the starting position.

An Experienced Defensive Line

In defense, Petkovic has made some wise choices. He brought in experienced players such as  Ramy Bensebaïni  and  Aïssa Mandi  to fortify the back line. This blend of youth and experience in the squad serves to improve Algeria’s chances in the upcoming qualification fixtures, creating a unit that aims to balance  aggressiveness  and tactical discipline.

Midfield and Attack: A Mixture of Experience and Youth

Petkovic’s midfield selection showcases the talents of players like  Nabil Bentaleb  and  Hicham Boudaoui , who are expected to provide both stability and creativity. Star winger  Riyad Mahrez , despite facing criticism, is included, proving his importance to the team. Along with him,  Amine Gouiri  and  Yassine Benzia  join the attack, contributing their qualities to enhance the offensive options available to the coach. Both players bring flair and technical skill that could be pivotal in breaking down the defenses of their opponents.

A Promising Squad for Future Competitions

Despite some ongoing controversies regarding certain players,  Youcef Belaïli  and  Baghdad Bounedjah  have been retained, adding to the forward depth. Petkovic’s selection reflects a strong commitment to building a comprehensive squad blending  experience  with fresh talent. With crucial matches on the horizon, every decision made by the coaching staff will significantly impact the team’s morale and performance.

This upcoming international break represents not just a moment for reflection but also an opportunity for  Algeria  to regain its footing on the international stage. The blending of  seasoned veterans  with emerging stars creates a squad with the potential to surprise in the series of qualifiers. As the matches draw closer, fans will be eagerly watching to see how this newly shaped Algeria side performs against the likes of Somalia and Uganda. The presence of Luca Zidane, in particular, adds a layer of depth that could prove essential for the team’s aspirations.
