Samsung’s Smart Refrigerators: The Emergence of Ads on Family Hub Models

In  2016 , Samsung shocked the world by incorporating a  huge screen  into one of its refrigerators. This innovation marked the beginning of a new era in  kitchen appliances , helping to make smart refrigerators a staple in high-end ranges that often cost  thousands of euros . The integrated screen has since evolved from merely showing the  time  and  notifications  to providing users with  recipes , displaying the fridge’s content, and now, alarmingly, showcasing  ads .

Neverera Ads. Recently, news broke in the United States regarding a  surprising update  for users of the Family Hub series. A Reddit user shared the update, which revealed that advertisements would be displayed on the refrigerator’s  home screen . This update was accompanied by a message stating: “To improve our service and offer additional content to users, advertisements on the home screen will be displayed.” Images or examples of these ads have yet to surface, leaving many curious about what they might entail.

A Pilot Program. According to a statement released to  Android Authority , Samsung verified that this is merely a  pilot program  affecting select Family Hub models within the United States. The objective is to display advertisements when the screen is not in use. The full statement underscored Samsung’s commitment to  innovation  and stated:

“Samsung is committed to innovation and improving the value for our appliance customers every day. As part of our continuous efforts to strengthen that value, we are carrying out a pilot program to offer promotions and announcements selected in certain Samsung Family Hub refrigerator models in the US market.”

“As part of this pilot program, the Family Hub refrigerators of the US will receive a software update through the network (OTN) with the terms of service (T&C) and the privacy notice (PN). Advertising will appear on certain cover screens of Family Hub. The cover screen appears when the Family Hub screen is inactive. The announcement design format can change depending on the family customization options for the deck screen, and advertising will not appear when the cover screen shows the ART or photo albums mode.”

“The ads can be discarded on the deck screens where they are shown, which means that the specific ads will not appear during the campaign period.”

Screens Everywhere. As recently as April, Samsung launched its new range of  Bespoke AI appliances , all equipped with  touch screens . During that announcement, a representative was questioned about Samsung’s initiative dubbed “screens everywhere” and whether it might lead to “ads everywhere.” Although the company’s initial response indicated that this was not a priority, the current pilot program with its smart refrigerators suggests a shift in strategy, at least in the United States.

Temporary Measures. It’s important to note that, for now, this program impacts a limited number of users and can be easily turned off by activating the ‘art mode’ or displaying photo albums when the fridge’s screen is not in use. Samsung has not yet disclosed any intentions to roll out this advertising component to  Europe or other regions . We have reached out to Samsung for confirmation regarding potential advertisements appearing on appliances in  Spain , and we will provide updates once we obtain that information.

In the evolving landscape of smart appliances, the advent of advertisements on household devices raises questions about user experience and privacy. As technology integrates further into everyday life, consumers may need to adapt to new forms of advertising. This trend marks a significant chapter in how we perceive our appliances—not just as functional units but also as platforms for commercial engagement. As we await further developments in the advertising strategies of smart devices, it becomes clear that the future of home technology is increasingly intertwined with advertising innovation.
