Dolby has recently announced the launch of its second-generation HDR format, Dolby Vision 2, after more than a decade since its predecessor. This new format maintains the same name but promises significant improvements in optimizing brightness and image contrast. The enhancement also includes artificial intelligence technology designed to automatically adjust the image based on different factors such as the type of content and the viewing environment.
What Changes with Dolby Vision 2?
One of the core features of Dolby Vision 2 is termed “Content Intelligence.” This set of AI-driven tools aims to transcend traditional HDR technology. The system employs automatic adjustments to the image settings by evaluating three crucial aspects: the nature of the content being displayed, the room’s ambient lighting conditions, and the specific features of the television itself.
Addressing the Dark Scene Dilemma
A common critique of HDR content has been its tendency to appear excessively dark, especially on mid-range and entry-level televisions. Dolby Vision 2 introduces a feature called Precision Black , which aims to resolve this issue by enhancing clarity in darker scenes. This is achieved without compromising the artistic intent of the creators. Additionally, another innovative tool, Light Sense , merges ambient light detection with original content reference data to refine the image optimization further.
Smoother Motion with Authentic Motion
Among the more controversial upgrades is the introduction of Authentic Motion , described by Dolby as “the first creative movement control tool.” This feature allows filmmakers to manipulate the smoothness of scene-by-scene motion, addressing a prevalent annoyance known as “judder.” Judder occurs when scenes display small jumps or stutters in the image. Dolby promises to implement this technology while avoiding the notorious “soap opera effect,” a common criticism in the film industry.
Two Options for Different Budgets
Dolby Vision 2 will be available in two distinct versions. Dolby Vision 2 Max is tailored for premium televisions, featuring added functionalities that maximize the potential of high-end equipment, including bidirectional tone mapping to exploit extreme brightness levels effectively. In contrast, the standard version will be offered for less sophisticated TVs, incorporating the primary advancements of the new image engine. The objective is to encourage manufacturers to adopt this new version, progressively replacing existing alternatives over time.
Pioneers in Adoption
Hisense is set to be the first brand to market televisions equipped with Dolby Vision 2. Utilizing the MediaTek Pentonic 800 processor alongside its Miravision Pro engine, Hisense is leading the charge. Content-wise, Canal+ has committed to supporting the new format in its library of films, series, and live sports events. With almost 350 models from brands like LG, TCL, Sony, and Xiaomi already supporting the current version of Dolby Vision, widespread adoption of the new technology is anticipated.

John Couling, Senior Vice President of Dolby Laboratories, expressed that “we have reached a turning point where television technology has changed dramatically, while artists continue to demand even more innovative tools.” Dolby is dedicated to offering creators the means to ensure their content is experienced in the most exceptional way at home. By providing greater control to both content creators and end users, Dolby Vision 2 sets a new standard for television viewing experiences. While the technology has yet to be fully tested, the promises it holds create significant anticipation for how it will reshape the future of home entertainment.
