The Unforgettable Bond Between a Man and His Dog on Two Wheels

Dogs have been evolving for  thousands of years  to become our loyal companions, always cherishing the moments we pamper them. While many memories might fade quickly, Kookie, a  mixed-breed dog , will forever cherish the adventures he shared with his owner, John McCown. Unlike conventional strolls through the park, their outings were extraordinary: they raced across desert terrains on motorcycles, competing in official tests.

In this thrilling duo, Kookie was no passive passenger; he proudly served as a  co-pilot .

The Odd Couple

Imagine a scenario that seems nearly impossible today due to stringent regulations and advanced telemetry systems. In a time when every extra gram of weight in competition vehicles was closely monitored, picture a furry dog perched atop a motorcycle tank, participating in official races and perfectly synchronizing with the uneven terrains beneath them. This was the reality for John McCown, a butcher by trade, in the 1960s.

John delighted in taking his bike for a spin, almost always accompanied by Kookie, who nestled in a rear basket. His passion escalated when he purchased an off-road motorcycle, leading him to dream of competing in  cross  events. And naturally, Kookie was part of this new venture.

My Dog Knows How to Ride

Rather than using a basket, John improvised a  “seat”  for Kookie on the gas tank of his beloved Husqvarna 400 motorcycle. There, Kookie thrived. It’s easy to imagine the dog eagerly awaiting rewarding treats of bones after each race. However, their relationship wasn’t just about snacks; John and Kookie trusted each other to navigate the motorcycle across rugged terrains.

Over approximately  300 races , the duo faced countless challenges—from bumpy potholes to streams of dust, adapting their positions on the bike to maneuver effectively. According to an article from the *American Motorcyclist* magazine, John’s wife shared that Kookie instinctively leaned into turns, nestled against the tank on rough terrain, and stood up during bumpy sections. Together, they were a sight to behold.

A Phenomenon

Their unique style caught the eyes of many, initially as a curious bystander spectacle, but soon escalated to widespread admiration. Kookie even featured in the documentary film On Any Sunday, was spotlighted in children’s books like *Kookie the Motorcycle Racing Dog* and *Kookie Rides Again*, and had sponsorship deals from notable brands such as Ossa, Can-Am, and Kawasaki.

John McCown and Kookie

Kookie Junior

Kookie started his motorcycle journey at the age of 10. After countless races, John decided to slow the pace as Kookie reached 13. But by the time Kookie was 14, John saw it fit for them to hang up the helmet and relax on the couch together. Kookie lived a full life until 16, and John fondly remembers that Kookie left behind a litter.

One pup from that litter was named Kookie Junior, who followed in his father’s tire tracks. Together, they also clinched off-road championships and showcased the enduring bond that both dogs shared with their owner. This partnership thrived on mutual enjoyment and companionship, particularly during exhausting races across the unforgiving landscapes of the Western American deserts.

To the Hall of Fame

Such was the legendary status of McCown and Kookie that they were honored by being inducted into the Hot Shoe Hall of Fame, dedicated to preserving the history of motorcycle racing. This institution acknowledges not only racers but also mechanics and journalists who shaped the sport’s legacy.

“Kookie learned to read the terrain, leaning back on the rugged sections and standing on smoother surfaces. John could always anticipate what lay ahead based on Kookie’s movements.” – Description from the Hot Shoe Hall of Fame plaque.

Sadly, John did not witness this recognition, as he passed away in 2011 due to complications following heart surgery. However, undoubtedly, Kookie and Kookie Junior were there waiting for him, their engines running, eager for more adventures together.
