The disturbing events surrounding Harold’s death have sent shockwaves through Bogotá. Mayor Galán responded solemnly, emphasizing the urgency and seriousness of the situation and directing competent authorities to ensure a thorough investigation. He remarked, “No commitment can be greater than that of protecting the life and integrity of children and adolescents. Each violent death of a minor signifies a failure for us as a society.”
Regrettably, Harold’s body was found showing apparent signs of violence. Galán firmly called upon the authorities to expedite the investigations and hold those responsible accountable. “We cannot accept more cases like Harold’s, nor continue failing our children,” he stated emphatically.
The mayor underscored the imperative to enhance protective measures for minors, particularly in neighborhoods beset by urban violence. He detailed how police units were activated promptly after Harold’s family filed a complaint, ensuring they received the necessary support during the search.
Harold’s mother, Carolina García , revealed that one of the assailants was armed. “My son was intercepted by five men, one of whom carried a firearm. We have a video capturing how they made a demand before taking him,” she recounted.
On the day of his abduction, the men allegedly forced Harold into a vehicle. Hours later, when incongruences emerged in the text messages sent from his phone, the family sensed something was amiss. They received a call indicating Harold was in “trouble” and was being held against his will.
Before Harold’s mother could arrive in Bogotá, the Gaula police unit conducted an operation in a location where they suspected he was held, but the operation was aborted due to nearby gunfire. That same day, a local burial was reported, which Harold had previously mentioned at school, potentially connecting the two incidents.
On August 9, the family received alarming rumors that Harold’s life was in peril, indicated by a message circulating on social media. Although they alerted the authorities, one officer assured them that the area was under surveillance. However, the family’s worst fears materialized when they organized a vigil, subsequently discovering Harold’s lifeless body just meters away from a purported safe zone.
The discovery of his body unveiled harrowing details; marks on his wrists indicated he might have been bound , and he bore multiple gunshot wounds. “He had shots, but I can’t specify how many or where,” his mother lamented. This tragic event occurred just five days following his disappearance, leaving the family grappling with unending questions and seeking justice.
As Bogotá mourns the loss of Harold Aroca García, the community stands united in demanding justice and safeguarding the future of its youth . The mayor’s assurances of intensified protective measures echo inside the hearts of those seeking accountability and change, in the hope that no other family will have to endure such heartache.
