Nails recently published photographs offer a detailed glimpse of the  J-15DT , the  electronic warfare  variant of the Chinese J-15 fighter jet. The images reveal at least three external pods alongside low-visibility badges and a code associated with operational devices. This suggests that we are dealing with more than a mere prototype; the J-15DT is poised to operate from carriers equipped with catapults, such as the  Fujian . While one should exercise caution regarding the images, they align closely with the intended operational direction of the program.

What Do We Know of the J-15DT? The  J-15D  has already been introduced as China’s dedicated  electronic warfare  platform, featuring specialized pods and support for suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD). According to Jane’s during its coverage of  Zhuhai 2024 , the  DT version  takes this a step further by optimizing its design for CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) operations, showcasing visible external alterations and structural adaptations suited for catapult launches. This latest imagery certainly supports that interpretation.

The J-15 did not emerge from a void;  Beijing acquired an unfinished prototype  of the Sukhoi SU-33 (T-10K-3) from Ukraine in 2001. This aircraft served as the foundation for reverse engineering, leading to the integration of Chinese systems derived from the  J-11B program . The first flight occurred in 2009, and the aircraft began operational service aboard the  Liaoning  aircraft carrier around 2012. Since then, variants like the  J-15T  and  DT  have been developed specifically for operations on carriers utilizing catapults.

Electronic Warfare in the Air: The Other Battlefield. The role of the  J-15DT  aligns closely with that of a “ Chinese Growler .” Its missions include disrupting radars and communications, escorting other aircraft, and providing  electronic warfare coverage  for the embarked air wing. Army Recognition highlights the potential integration of  YJ-91  anti-radiation missiles for SEAD missions, although no official confirmation has been issued regarding this capability.

Chinese J-15D

Will It Operate from Fujian? Everything Points to Yes. The  Fujian  (Type 003), China’s first aircraft carrier equipped with  electromagnetic catapults  (EMALS), has demonstrated its capability to perform catapult launches with  J-15T  aircraft, as shown in official materials released at the end of July 2025. Media outlets like  Naval News  report that the  J-15DT  is expected to be aligned with this platform, with its operational entry scheduled for late 2025, although this timeline remains subject to modification.

Chinese Airlines Problem

One More Piece in China’s Military Puzzle. The  J-15DT  represents a crucial component in the ongoing modernization of the  People’s Liberation Army . China’s ambition is to achieve a “ modern ” military by 2035 and reach “ world-class ” status by 2049. In naval capabilities alone, 2025 saw the commissioning of the first  Type 054B frigate , while the  Type 075  amphibious assault ship family has been progressively integrated since 2021. With the upcoming  Type 004  on the horizon, these developments reinforce China’s ambitions to cultivate a more capable and sophisticated  embarked aviation force .
