The State Meteorology Agency (Aemet) has recently issued a warning regarding an impending heat wave set to affect most of the Spanish peninsula , excluding the Cantabrian region . The heat is expected to persist until at least Sunday , even as slight temperature reductions are anticipated on Wednesday .
Despite the forecasts of a minor drop in temperatures due to a shift in weather patterns, Aemet has emphasized that high temperatures will resume across various regions, particularly in the Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys , where temperatures could reach 42ºC or beyond .
The forecast suggests that the slight decline in temperatures will be a result of a minor elevation decrease that is expected to affect the southern parts of the peninsula. This shift could yield moderate temperature decreases in some areas; however, locales in the Valle del Oeste and southwest are still likely to see temperatures hover around 40ºC . The Cantabrian , Alto Ebro , and northern regions of the Northern Plateau will experience a change in wind direction, leading to a potential increase in temperatures.
On Thursday , Aemet anticipates a widespread upward trend in temperatures, with few significant changes expected by Friday . During these days, 38ºC is projected to be exceeded in numerous areas, including the southwestern quadrant , southern Galicia , and the western portion of the Northern Plateau . The agency notably highlights that temperatures in the depressions of the Northeast and the valleys of the Tajo , Guadiana , and Guadalquivir might peak between 40-42ºC .
Additionally, Aemet has warned of favorable conditions for isolated thunderstorms , particularly in the afternoons, across southern regions. These storms may be accompanied by slight rainfall and significant gusts of wind, leading to potentially severe local effects.
As for nighttime temperatures, Aemet predicts that there will be no significant variations, keeping minimums elevated; temperatures are expected to remain around 23-25ºC in the central and southern peninsular regions and along the Mediterranean coast . From Thursday onward, these temperatures are likely to also extend to the Ebro Valley .
Looking ahead to the weekend, the meteorological agency anticipates that the abnormally high temperatures will persist through Saturday and Sunday , with the exception of the southeast quadrant . Aemet believes that additional temperature increases could be registered in the west and southwest , possibly resulting in temperature spikes of 42ºC in the aforementioned valleys.
While current assessments indicate that this heatwave will dominate the forecast over the coming days, Aemet has cautioned against making premature predictions regarding potential declines in temperatures. Initial indications suggest that by Monday, August 11 , a decrease in maximum temperatures in the north could occur due to an approaching Atlantic trough .
Given these developments, residents are urged to stay hydrated and take precautions against the extreme heat. It’s essential to remain informed through reliable sources, especially during this peak summer season when heat-related illnesses become a more significant concern. Careful monitoring of local weather updates will be crucial for safeguarding health and well-being during this unprecedented weather pattern .
