The Argentine Cup enters its decisive stages, and one of the most  exciting clashes  in the round of 16 is between Belgrano de Córdoba and Independiente de Avellaneda. The Road to the Match

Both clubs are entering this critical match under pressure. The teams have not experienced promising performances in their recent outings. Under the leadership of Julio Vaccari,  Independiente  has struggled, yet to find a victory in the Clausura Tournament. Their campaign began with a heart-wrenching 2-2 draw against Sarmiento in Junín, which was followed by two disappointing defeats: a 1-2 loss to Workshops at home in the Liberators of America, and a 1-0 loss against  Gymnastics  in La Plata.

Currently, Independiente finds itself outside of qualification positions for international competitions, sitting  tenth with 30 points , tied with Deportivo Riestra and Huracán. Compounding their woes, the team is gearing up to face Universidad de Chile in the round of 16 of the South American Cup on August 13, adding pressure to their performance in the domestic cup.

On the other hand, Belgrano’s Clausura start has been similarly underwhelming. After an impressive 3-0 victory against Huracán at Patricios Park, they faltered at home, losing 1-0 to Racing and settling for a scoreless draw against Independiente Rivadavia in Mendoza. As of now,  Belgrano  occupies the -20th position on the annual table, accumulating just  21 points .

Implications of the Match

With both teams seeking redemption, the match serves as an opportunity for either side to turn their fortunes around. The winner will progress to the quarterfinals, facing the victor in the encounter between Atlético Tucumán and Newell’s from Rosario, whose match has yet to be scheduled.

Independiente’s journey in the  Argentine Cup  commenced strongly, with a 2-0 victory over Sportivo Belgrano in San Nicolás, followed by a 2-1 triumph against Mendoza Gymnastics, coming back from behind in that match to secure their advancement.

Conversely, Belgrano de Córdoba achieved their success without needing penalties, convincingly defeating Real Pilar 3-1 in the 32nd final. Following this, they edged out Defenders of Belgrano 3-2 in a dramatic match that was not without controversy; three players were expelled during the thrilling encounter.
