The  Mazda RX-7 , known for its stunning design and revolutionary rotary engine, stands as one of the most iconic vehicles from the Japanese car culture of the 1990s. The third generation of this beloved sports car is not just a piece of sculpture — it embodies the passion and innovation of its time, captivating the hearts of automotive enthusiasts worldwide.

For many who grew up in the 90s,  Japanese car culture  was akin to a treasure trove of unforgettable experiences. Titles like  Gran Turismo  showcased legendary models, solidifying Japan’s reputation in the automotive world. Legendary vehicles like the  Honda NSX  and the  Nissan Skyline GT-R  dominated street racing fantasies, while rally icons like the  Subaru Impreza  and the  Mitsubishi Lancer EVO  carved their names into history. Tuning culture thrived with cars like the  Toyota Supra  and, of course, the RX-7 leading the charge.

The RX-7 further embraced its fame when it was featured in popular media.  Dominic Toretto ’s RX-7 in “The Fast and the Furious” and  Han ’s ride in “Tokyo Drift” not only reminded fans of its prowess but reignited interest in rotary-engine vehicles. Combined with racing videogames that included it as a playable vehicle, the RX-7 became a symbol of cultural nostalgia.

Beyond its looks lies the heart of the RX-7—a  peculiar rotary engine  that produced a unique sound and exhilarating performance. Enthusiasts continue to reminisce about its thrilling capabilities, and the echoes of its glorious era still resonate today.

A DIESEL MAZDA?

Enter  Arnold , a Polish car enthusiast who recently transformed his RX-7. “I bought it two years ago, and it was nothing more than a chassis… no engine, no gearbox, no interior,” he said, recounting his journey on the  Nightride YouTube channel . With a confession that felt like unburdening a guilty secret, Arnold shared how he began with aesthetics before realizing it was time to give the car a heart.

Arnold expressed, ” I started with the aesthetic part ,” aiming for a design reminiscent of Japanese  Touge  culture—where racing occurs on winding mountain roads. As he worked on the external features, the sheer potential of the RX-7 nagged at him until he inevitably turned his focus to an engine.

The RX-7 is renowned for housing a  biturbo rotary engine  capable of generating 280 hp, paired with an exceptionally lightweight chassis. It quickly became a favorite among drift enthusiasts for its powerful performance, remarkable style, and sounds reminiscent of race legends like the  Mazda 787b .

However, Arnold’s vision took an unexpected turn. ” I wanted the car to be controversial ,” he noted, and what could raise eyebrows more than swapping out the iconic rotary for a six-cylinder  diesel engine ? Yes, you read that correctly! He sourced the engine from a  BMW 5 Series E39 , intending to create a unique and impactful vehicle.

With a mischievous grin, Arnold candidly admitted, “I wanted to have a car with a shocking engine under the hood.” And shock it did, as he decided to completely abandon the trademark rotary sound people had come to love.

This venture was initially envisioned as a simplistic and inexpensive drift car, a perfect complement to his other RX-7, which retained its rotary engine. However, Arnold’s ambition saw him upgrading the diesel power from 184 to 270 hp, along with a customized rear differential from BMW.

Arnold now uses the RX-7 as his daily driver, and while it garners attention due to its striking looks, the absence of the characteristic rotary howl either attracts or confounds passersby. ” Some love him and others hate him ,” he summarized aptly.

In conclusion, many will have strong opinions about this radical transformation, but what remains undeniable is Arnold’s passion for car culture and the innovative spirit behind the project. Although it may not resonate with every purist, the fact that the chassis of a Mazda RX-7 was reborn into a striking new form is a testament to the evolving nature of automotive creativity.
