Several hundred people gathered this Thursday evening at  Plaza de Callao  in  Madrid , protesting against racism in response to recent altercations in  Torre Pacheco , Murcia. The attendees called for a “forceful” response from public authorities, united under the banner of “no to racism.”

A Unified Call for Action

The gathering was organized by multiple civil society groups, including the  State Confederation of Neighborhood Associations (CEAV) , the  Regional Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Madrid (FRAVM) , unions like  CCOO  and  UGT , and various humanitarian organizations such as the  Spanish Commission for Refugee Assistance (CEAR)  and the  LGTBI+ State Federation (FELGTBI+) . These organizations collectively aimed to voice their dissent against rising xenophobia and violence.

The Atmosphere of Resistance

Demonstrators carried a massive banner proclaiming ‘Against racism, for the  #Stopodio  coexistence’ as they rallied. For more than thirty minutes, they chanted slogans like “no human being is illegal,” “racists in our neighborhoods,” and “native or foreign, the same working class.” The chants reflected both anger and solidarity among various communities in  Spain .

Messages Against Intolerance

Participants held up signs with powerful messages such as “human rights for all,” “coexistence, neither racism nor violence,” and “for peace, yes to diversity.” Other signs poignantly read, “yesterday we emigrated, today we are discriminated against,” highlighting the hypocrisy of discrimination faced by immigrants today compared to historical narratives.

Voices of Concern

Among the participants were individuals like  Fatima  and  Pilar , who shared their thoughts on the situation. Pilar emphasized that the recent outbreaks of violence cannot be justified as freedom of expression, labeling them unequivocally as  hate crimes . Fatima voiced her frustration about being unable to wear her traditional dress in public, questioning the ignorance surrounding such expressions of culture and identity. “We are not a threat, we are a force,” she stated, reinforcing a message of empowerment against prejudice.

A Call to Stop Hate

A manifesto was read during the gathering, warning against the growing forces of racism, xenophobia, and hate that have surfaced in light of recent events. The protesters condemned the coordinated efforts by neo-Nazi and extreme right groups in  Torre Pacheco , asserting that such actions regress society to dark historical moments that should have been left behind.

The Role of Social Mobilization

The collective voice from the demonstrators demanded a  vigorous response  to this wave of intolerance. The manifesto expressed a commitment to not remain passive in the face of hate, urging social mobilization, media coverage, and active engagement from institutions. The participants called for the  State Security Forces  to thoroughly investigate and dismantle organizations that propagate such racism and intolerance.

Support from Various Entities

The movement received backing from numerous organizations, including the  Federation of Journalists’ Trade Unions  and  Amnesty International Madrid , showcasing a wide coalition of support. Political parties such as  PSOE ,  Podemos ,  IU , and  PCE  also joined the cause, amplifying the message that discrimination and hatred have no place in society.

Wider Impact and Future Actions

The protests in Madrid were not singular; similar demonstrations took place in other cities throughout  Spain , marking a nationwide resurgence against racism and discrimination. These events serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice, drawing attention to the need for solidarity among various communities to combat hate in all its forms.

In conclusion, as society grapples with the resurgence of xenophobic sentiments, gatherings like the one in Plaza de Callao become crucial. They not only raise awareness about the pressing issues of racism but also foster a sense of community and belonging among diverse populations. The fight against hate is far from over, and it requires unwavering commitment and solidarity across all sections of society.
