Changes in the Electoral Process for 2026
The upcoming 2026 electoral process will see a significant transformation in how election tables are managed. This time, approximately 842,000 citizens will be randomly selected to serve as table members, which includes both holders and alternates. This decision aims to expedite the installation of tables and enhance electoral logistics throughout the country.
The drawing of table members is set to take place on January 29, 2026, as confirmed by Piero Corvetto, head of the National Electoral Process Office (ONPE), during a presentation to the Constitution Commission of the Congress. Unlike past elections, where the designation typically involved six citizens per table, this time nine individuals will be assigned to each table.
The draw will consist of selecting the president, secretary, third member, along with their respective alternates. A comprehensive list of those selected will be published on February 11, 2026, coinciding with the announcement of party placements on the voting card.
In the general elections of 2021 , the ONPE appointed 518,928 individuals as table members, indicating a notable increase of over 60% in this electoral cycle.
Mandatory Duties and Incentives for Table Members
Becoming a table member is not optional; it’s a mandatory duty and can only be declined for valid reasons. The ONPE has established new benefits and incentives to those fulfilling this responsibility.
Selected individuals will receive financial compensation of S/ 160.50 per electoral day, an increase from the previous S/ 120. This compensation equates to around 3% of a Tax Unit (UIT).
In addition, individuals who participate in official training sessions will be granted a paid day off, applicable to both public and private sector employees. This benefit can be availed within 90 days following the election, contingent upon coordination with the employer. In cases where mutual agreement cannot be reached, the day will be determined by the respective company or institution.
To ensure adequate readiness, the ONPE has scheduled training days, with the first occurring on March 29 and the second on April 5. The simulation of the voting computer system will align with the general elections date on April 12.
Transparency and Citizen Participation
The entire process, including the raffle and training, will be conducted with the involvement of notaries, veterans of the National Election Jury (JNE), and representatives from various political organizations. This collaborative effort aims to ensure the transparency and reliability of the electoral process.
Once the draw of table members occurs on January 29 and the official list is published on February 11, citizens will have the opportunity to verify their selection via the ONPE digital channels.
