Olympique Lyonnais Begins Pre-Season Training

On Monday, 29 players gathered at the Groupama OL Training Center as Olympique Lyonnais kicked off the pre-season. Among the notable players present were Corentin Tolisso , Georges Mikautadze , and Malick Fofana , alongside young talents from the club’s training academy. The day began with physical tests, followed by an intense training session that lasted from 5 p.m., which was partially open to the press for 30 minutes . This session featured a variety of exercises, including race-based warming-up , moving drills with minimal ball touches, specific goalkeeper training , and small-sided games. The focus was clearly on getting players accustomed to the ball after a long break from competitive action.

However, not all expected faces were present. Notably absent were Ernest Nuamah (injured), Jordan Veretout (personal commitments), and Orel Mangala . While Mangala wasn't participating in on-field activities, he was seen running on the pitch under the watchful eyes of physical coaches Cédric Uras and Alexandre Fahri . In his moment of exertion, Mangala expressed, "It's a blessing to run." This sentiment carries a weight of experience, as the player has faced significant struggles recently.

Orel Mangala: A Tough Road to Recovery

Following a tumultuous six-month stint with Lyon, where he played 12 games and scored twice, Mangala was permanently signed for approximately €23.4 million . It’s important to note that his former club, Nottingham Forest , retains a 10% profit-sharing clause should another transfer occur. Mangala's recent journey also saw him loaned to Everton , where he played 22 matches but faced a setback due to a severe knee injury during a match against Brighton on January 25. This unfortunate circumstance forced him to undergo surgery shortly thereafter.

Post-surgery, Mangala shared on social media, “The operation was a success. Thank you to the medical staff who contributed to its realization! Now my recovery begins. #Mangality” Over the weeks since, he has focused on rehabilitation, which is standard for knee ligament injuries that typically require 6 to 8 months of recovery time. With his return to Lyon, there are hopes that he will provide a significant boost to the team under the guidance of coach Paulo Fonseca and his staff.

Uncertain Future for the Belgian Midfielder

Despite being on the mend, speculation looms around Mangala's future at Lyon. Reports indicate that while the club has assured "nothing to report" , there is a degree of uncertainty regarding his long-term position, primarily due to his recent injury. However, the player remains focused on getting back onto the field, particularly with an eye on the 2026 World Cup . The competition for midfield spots is expected to be fierce under national team coach Rudi Garcia . As Mangala continues his rehabilitation, he may find it challenging to secure a place if he stays sidelined for an extended period.

Interestingly, Italian media recently hinted at interest from Fiorentina , with sources suggesting that he is also on the radar of Bologna and has been offered to Atalanta . English and German clubs have expressed interest as well, seeking updates on his recovery and overall condition at Lyon. For the time being, no club has moved beyond the inquiry stage. Thus, Orel Mangala finds himself in a position of focus, investing all his energy in returning to the pitch, which remains his primary objective at this point.

As the pre-season progresses, all eyes will be on Mangala and the rest of the Olympique Lyonnais squad as they gear up for what promises to be an exciting season ahead. The challenges they face both on and off the pitch will shape their path, but one thing is clear: the players are committed to rising back to the top of French football. With dedicated training and a target-focused mindset, Mangala and his teammates are setting the stage for a comeback that fans will eagerly anticipate.
