Joint Maritime Exercise by Japan, US, and the Philippines
The coast guards of Japan, the United States, and the Philippines conducted a joint exercise off the coast of Kagoshima in southern Japan on Friday. This operation is part of their efforts to strengthen maritime cooperation in response to the increasing military presence of the Chinese regime in the Pacific region.
The drill involved 350 personnel from the three countries and was carried out under a scenario that included vessel collisions at sea, onboard fires, and crew members falling into the water. Authorities stated that the objective was to enhance operational coordination and emergency response capabilities in maritime scenarios.
Growing Tensions with China
This exercise took place shortly after Japan confirmed that two Chinese aircraft carriers operated together for the first time in the Pacific in June. Tensions escalated when Tokyo reported that a Chinese fighter jet, operating from one of those vessels, flew dangerously close to a Japanese reconnaissance aircraft. The incident led to accusations exchanged between Beijing and Tokyo, worsening the already strained relations.
The trilateral cooperation in terms of coast guard activities is part of a broader strategy to ensure a “free and open Indo-Pacific.” Admiral Yoshio Seguchi , the commander of the Japanese coast guard, stated in a press conference Wednesday that these exercises aim to “promote mutual understanding and trust.”

Strengthening Maritime Cooperation
The first joint maneuvers among the three nations were carried out in the Philippines in 2023, following an agreement reached by their leaders to enhance maritime cooperation amid shared concerns regarding the military maneuvers of the Chinese regime in the region.
China frequently sends coast guard vessels, warships, and military aircraft around the disputed islands in the East China Sea , which are also claimed by Japan. In recent months, their operations have expanded to Guam , a US territory in the Pacific that hosts military bases. In the South China Sea , Beijing maintains a strong presence and regularly confronts Filipino vessels, asserting almost total control over these waters.

Strengthening Defense Capabilities
This new exercise reflects a growing coordination between Tokyo, Washington, and Manila in the face of what they consider destabilizing actions by China in contested maritime areas. These maneuvers were conducted a few weeks after the conclusion of the annual Balikatan military exercises, which involved 14,000 Filipino and US soldiers and are seen as a testament to the joint defensive capabilities under the Mutual Defense Treaty between the two countries.
The cooperative efforts of these nations highlight the importance of solidarity in maintaining peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region, as tensions with China escalate. With consistent participation in joint exercises, Japan, the United States, and the Philippines aim to bolster their maritime capabilities and ensure a united front against regional challenges .
