The Tragic Incident of a Yorkshire Terrier in a Park
The sad truth about dog ownership is that unexpected tragedies can occur seemingly out of nowhere. Recently, an 83-year-old woman from Saint-Estève, a small town near Perpignan in France, faced an unimaginable incident while walking her beloved Yorkshire Terrier in a nearby park. Reports indicate that this shocking event unfolded as she enjoyed a typical morning stroll.
According to her account shared with *L’Indépendant*, “It was just after ten in the morning. I took my little dog for a walk like I do every day. Although he is 11 years old, he is still very active. I always keep him on a leash. Suddenly, I heard a dog barking behind us. It was a Mastiff, but I couldn’t identify the breed; I had never seen it before. A woman was holding it on a leash.”

Mastiffs are typically large dogs that can weigh over 80 kilograms . Despite their size and imposing presence, they are generally known to be calm, loyal, and protective . Unlike some breeds that are labeled as potentially dangerous, Mastiffs typically do not exhibit aggressive behavior. On the other hand, the Yorkshire Terrier, a breed originally developed in England, is quite the opposite. Weighing only about three kilograms , this small dog is known for its long fur and vibrant energy.

Typically, interactions between dogs in play parks are peaceful, with many enjoying camaraderie across different breeds and sizes. However, this tragic event shattered the norm, leaving the elderly woman in shock. Recounting the encounter, she said, “I felt danger. I immediately shortened the leash to pick up my dog, but the Mastiff lunged at him first and bit his throat. He died right there in front of me; it was horrific. I couldn’t do anything; I was so shocked. The owner of the Mastiff didn’t stop, didn’t ask how I was, didn’t even apologize. She ran away with her dog while bystanders tried to help me.”
In the aftermath of this tragic incident, the grieving woman is left with numerous questions. Was the Mastiff let loose intentionally, or did it escape? Why was it not wearing a muzzle? Processing her loss, she hopes to prevent such a tragedy from happening again—not just for the sake of pets but also for the children who frequent the park. “My dog is gone, but there are often children playing in that park. If the Mastiff had attacked one of them… I want to share my story so that this does not happen again ,” she added.
She also expressed gratitude to those who supported her during this distressing time and to the local police who took her statement and searched for the woman with the Mastiff. Although she has lodged a complaint seeking justice, she knows it cannot bring back her beloved companion.
