On the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labor , the National Superintendence of Labor Inspection ( Sunafil ) presented an innovative technological tool aimed at combating illegal child labor in Peru. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing a pressing social issue that affects thousands of minors across the country.
The newly launched mobile app, called SOS Alerta Sunafil , empowers citizens to report instances of child exploitation swiftly and anonymously. It represents a significant step towards involving the public in the fight against child labor, enabling more individuals to contribute valuable information to curtail this violation of children’s rights.
At an event held at the Mercado Central , National Superintendent Michael Guevara explained that the application allows users to submit photos, videos, and the exact location where child labor is occurring, all from the convenience of their mobile phones. This digital approach streamlines the reporting process and encourages community involvement in safeguarding vulnerable children.
In an interview with TVPerú Noticias , Guevara emphasized that the aim of this initiative is to enhance civic engagement in addressing child labor, enabling more citizens to provide crucial information to confront this widespread challenge. He believes that increased public participation will lead to more effective enforcement of existing laws against child labor.
The reporting process through the app is direct and user-friendly. Users simply need to access the app and press the SOS button . They can then attach photographic or video evidence of the situation , followed by entering the exact address where the minor is working. Providing a detailed description of the circumstances is vital to complete the report. At the end of the process, users are asked for information regarding the business or employer involved. Additionally, users can choose whether to reveal their identity or maintain their anonymity.
Alternative Reporting Methods for Child Labor
Not everyone may have access to a mobile device; therefore, Sunafil has also established the 1801 hotline under the Ministry of Labor and Promotion of Employment. This hotline provides guidance on how to act in instances of child labor and allows individuals to report violations confidentially. This alternative avenue ensures that all citizens, regardless of their access to technology, can participate in reporting and combating child labor effectively.
Understanding Legal Framework Regarding Adolescent Labor
During the event, Michael Guevara also took the opportunity to clarify the regulations surrounding adolescent labor in the country. According to existing legislation, children aged 14 years or older are permitted to work , but only under specific conditions that safeguard their welfare and educational rights. This legal framework aims to balance the need for work with the fundamental rights of adolescents.
To work legally, adolescents must obtain a permit signed by their parents and provide certain documentation, such as a medical certificate, evidence of school attendance, and, in cases of night work, a legal ruling granting permission. These regulations are designed to ensure the safety and well-being of young workers.
Guevara clarified that not all jobs are suitable for minors, especially those that could endanger their physical safety. Adolescents aged 14 to 17 are prohibited from engaging in high-risk activities , including mining, operating heavy machinery, driving vehicles, using electrical or explosive tools, and engaging in certain agricultural practices. Furthermore, domestic work and activities that involve a significant risk to their health are also banned.
While the law permits minors to work under certain conditions, there are strict limitations on the types of jobs they can perform.
