The Vibrant Celebration of the Catalan Sausage Championship

Le parc de Clairfont à Toulouges has once again become the heart of  culinary celebration , hosting the  4th edition of the World Catalan Sausage Championship  over the weekend. The event has attracted food enthusiasts and families alike, bringing together over  8,000 to 10,000 visitors  to revel in the cultural and gastronomic offerings of the Catalan region.

As the sun reached its zenith on June 8, the  sound of the local band Els Tirons  filled the air, blending harmoniously with the aromas of grilled sausages and the laughter of families scattered across the verdant grounds. The ambiance was truly festive, as participants settled on checkered blankets or simply on the grass, drawn together to celebrate the  star of the weekend: the Catalan sausage .

Since the early hours of Saturday, the celebration has been in full swing, organized by the  Catalan Saucisse Club , which aims not only to promote local cuisine but also to underline the  rich traditions  of the region. According to  Jérémy Fourquet , co-president of the organizing association, “The goal is to showcase our gastronomy and traditions. It’s a culinary journey through Roussillon.”

Festival-goers experienced a delightful  culinary exploration  as twelve sausages were pre-selected and judged based on appearance, texture, color, and, of course, taste. This year’s competition took place in a private setting, ensuring a fair evaluation of the contestants.

Success of the Championship

The festival’s success was palpable, with attendees eager to indulge in the  culinary delights  offered throughout the weekend. Starting with a grand tasting, the unique  espadrille-throwing contest  piqued interest, where winners could take home kilos of sausages. As the sun set, the  Sausage Party  brought even more excitement, coinciding with a giant screen broadcast of the highly anticipated USAP-Toulouse match.

“We expect between  8,000 and 10,000 visitors for the weekend,”  notes Fourquet, observing the vibrant atmosphere as families and friends mingled and shared moments. “It’s lively, it’s family-oriented. It’s enormous!”

As the afternoon wore on, the food arena came alive with a diverse array of local chefs reinventing the star dish. From Vietnamese  Banh Mi  to  hot-dogs , and even  poutine , the  Catalan sausage  found its way into various culinary creations from around the world. This innovative approach to traditional cuisine showcases its versatility.

But who emerged victorious in this year’s championship? The verdict was announced around 4 PM:  Boucherie Mele-Langlois  from Canohès claimed the top prize, followed closely by  Chez Arnaud  from Le Soler and  Boucherie Matillas  from Corneilla-del-Vercol. Additionally, the highly coveted “most Catalan sausage” award went to  Chez Michel , located in Canet-en-Roussillon.

This recognition marks a significant step for a product that remains relatively unknown outside the  Pyrénées-Orientales . “At its core, every butcher in the area has their own version of the  Catalan sausage . However, there isn’t a true definition,” admits Jérémy Fourquet. “We’re working towards obtaining an  PGI label  (Protected Geographical Indication). It’s essential to establish a framework and recognize this heritage.”
